Nikon Camera Control Pro ReviewGreat for extended time lapse sequences... - Version: 2.3.0, 11/3/2008 11:11AM PST

I use Nikon Camera Control Pro 2 primarily to shoot time lapse sequences that take longer than 3-4 hours. I have no complains about the Nikon Camera Control software (been using Nikon software since Nikon Capture 4).

The one pet peeve I have is the Nikon updating function that is built into the Camera Control Pro 2. When I check through the Nikon software, it says all my software is up to date even though it is not. This has been an issue since the early days of Nikon's Capture/Camera control software. If it wasn't for sites like Version Tracker, I would not be informed of any Nikon software updates.

Nikon Camera Control Pro CommentaryDownload Problems - Version: 2.3.0, 9/30/2008 08:17AM PST

This update is supposed to be available through the Nikon Message Center (the standard path for updates for Camera Control Pro), but it has failed repeatedly for me by simply hanging up and never completing. I decided to try to link here and the download started, but was extraordinarily slow (the browser reports 11-17 kbytes/sec) and finally gave out at about 7.2 Mb rather than the complete 28-29 Mbytes.

I'm not sure if there is an issue with Nikon's servers, but for now I am unable to download the update.

Nikon Camera Control Pro CommentaryOlder than 3/18/08 - Version: 2.1.0, 3/16/2008 08:31AM PST

This version has been available on the Nikon site for about 3 weeks. I know because I delayed purchasing my D3 until Nikon came up with a version of CCP2 that worked under Leopard, and I've had the camera for about 3 weeks. Both the program and the camera work fine for me.

Had a discussion in January with a Nikon tech rep who told me that Nikon takes so long to respond to new OSes because "their team goes out and buys a new OS the day the Apple releases it". I suggested that they should participate in Apple's developer program so they would get pre-release copies and could start earlier. He assured me that there was no such program...

Nikon Camera Control Pro ReviewSmile for The Camera! - Version: 2.1.0, 3/16/2008 12:24AM PST

As most digital photographers today are aware, it's such a hassle to take the camera out of the bag, set the aperture, set the shutter speed, set the mode, and so on, and to have to do it all... manually! P-l-e-a-s-e tell me what is "automatic," what is "computerized", what is "digital" about that? Unless digital means fingers, photography in the "digital age" is still so gosh darn... labor-intensive and hands-on!

Well, that's what I love about this app. As long as I remember to leave the lens cap off the lens, and the lens on the camera, I can pretty much take shots without ever handling the camera at all! My shiny new Nikon D3 is such a heavy beast, especially loaded with the batteries and a 17-35 mm AF-S or a 80--400 mm VR lens, that it's just easier to shoot this way, without ever touching the camera at all.

Of course things were different back in the days of a little FE2 with a 50mm lens, but there's just no going back. Anyway, thanks to Nikon Camera Control Pro, from the comfort of my Herman Miller office chair I have taken a fantastic series of shots of the inside of my camera bag which I am hoping to have published by a well known photography magazine soon.

[Reposting to bring this up to the top level.]

Downloaded and installed 2.0.1, hooked up my D1X, and CCP saw it and allowed control from my laptop once again.

Finally! (fyi: 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo)

Nikon Camera Control Pro CommentaryNOT Leopard compatible - Version: 2.0, 2/18/2008 12:00AM PST

Contrary to the above, CCP is not compatible with Leopard. I've spoken with a Nikon tech, and he stated the new version that will be compatible with Leopard will be released "soon." He then speculated that it might be in the next couple of weeks.

Lessee...Leopard was released last October. November, December, January, and we are heading to week number 3 of February. Yeah, I'm frustrated...

Nikon Camera Control Pro ReviewWow...Loves to Crash and Hang - Version: 1.3.0, 5/22/2007 08:04AM PST

Purchased for critical time-lapse photography product - huge disappointment.

Repeatedly crashes on Intel Mac Mini, without any rhyme or reason. Runs for 18 hours flawlessly, then crashes. Restart computer, and application - runs for just an hour before crash. Restart, and runs for six hours before crash. All this on brand new system, with nothing unusual installed, and all updates for the app and system installed.

When it did work, it worked well. Really missing one thing, though. Want to use this to document construction of a new building, but it's missing the ability to trigger the camera only during specified hours. (I don't really need a bunch of shots of the site during the night). This is a big oversight by Nikon.

Making things worse is the fact that Nikon offers no software support forums to assist in figuring out the problem. Beware. You have been warned!

Nikon Camera Control Pro ReviewProblem installing v1.3.0 - Version: 1.3.0, 3/19/2007 09:08AM PST

I have Nikon Capture 4.4.2 and it works perfectly. I have also been using Camera Control Pro v1.0.0. It also works perfectly with my D70s and D200. When I try to install the Camera Control Por v1.3.0 update, I keep getting a message saying..

"A different region of Camera Control Pro is already installed. First uninstall the already installed Camera Control Pro, then reinstall the software."

I obtained this version from the Nikon Canada website, along with the version 1.3.0 update so I don't understand the different region thing ( I also tried the updater from nikon USA website, and as well from version tracker).

I then tried uninstalling, and then reinstalling as the message instructed but v.1.3.0 is an updater and will not work without first having version 1.0.0 installed. I then reinstalled v1.0.0, rebooted the system, and then attempted to install v1.3.0 but still got the same message. As a result I have not able to update to Camera Control pro to v1.3.0.

I downloaded and installed this update and had the same problems as Deggy (see earlier review). I was able to fix the problem (with Nikon's help) by uninstalling, then installing v1.0.0, then REBOOTING THE SYSTEM, then installing v1.3.0 update. Now it works perfectly.
