Product Description:

Do you have a shiny new iPod in your pocket ? Or perhaps a flash drive or small portable hard drive ? Now you can turn it into a Mac OS X diagnostic, repair, and maintenance tool. DasBoot™ allows you to take any third party boot CD (such as those shipped by SubRosaSoft.com Inc, Prosoft Engineering Inc, Alsoft Inc, or Micromat Inc) and quickly create a bootable diagnostic device that contains any of your own utilities you may wish to install.

You can use your iPod to boot and repair Mac OS X computers* as needed without erasing it and taking away your ability to play music. With the help of DasBoot™ you get to carry all the tools you'll need with you. But unlike expensive third party alternatives, you'll have plenty of space left over in case you need to recover data.

DasBoot™ devices run software much faster than a CD/DVD repair disk. In addition you can re-configure the device at any time to add new utilities, updated versions of software or newer versions of Mac OS X.

SubRosaSoft DasBoot™ helps you build a pocket-sized toolkit for your Mac - just the way you want it - and it's totally free !! Just plug it in and all your tools will be at your fingertips.

DasBoot™ has been tested with the following disk utilities and data recovery tools, but will also run many others; CopyCatX, FileSalvage, MacForensicsLab, VolumeWorks, Drive Genius, Data Rescue II, DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro

* Note - Users of DasBoot™ must have purchased licenses to install the various disk utilities, and own an appropriate disk utility bootable CD/DVD to use as the source disk. Users who wish to have a forensically sound bootable device should use MacForensicsLab as their source disk.

DasBoot™ is free to download, and may be freely distributed.

I've managed to make the program work on a G5 (OS 10.4.11) which sees Disk Warrior . However, on a MacBook Pro (OS 10.5.6), DasBoot will not detect the Disk Warrior CD. It is this computer which desperately needs an external disc repair boot volume.

Just tried it last night. Loaded DiskWarrior, Techtools and CopyCatX (as well as Disk Utility). Loaded on a 2G stick (remember to format as HFS+). still had 700mg free on stick after loading the apps. I ran all apps loaded on the stick, all ran without a problem.

This program is great. No more loading diagnostic tools from a firewire or a DVD.

Well, just my experience:

I installed using:
MacBook Pro running 10.4.9
Drive Genius 1.51 CD (its a OSX 10.4.7)
USB-Stick 1GB (regular, formatted with Disc Utility to HFS journaled)

After creating, restart - and press "alt" to choose booting device. You will not be able to unmount the Drive Genius Disc before the restart. So choosing the right booting device will probably show you two "Drive Genius 1.51" entries. Press unmount key to unmount the CD. Restart again with your REGULAR host system. And turn it off again.

Then reboot AGAIN. This time again with "alt". Voila! It will show you your USB drive as a new booting device, with the name you gave the USB drive in the first hand. And yep, now it DOES start. It will take a while.

Just tried Drive Genius, FileSalvage, Disc Util from the USB stick. Dont expect speed wonders loading the system and the apps ;)
