Product Description:

PacketStream provides point-and-click activation of the Mac's built-in network monitoring program, which is usually available only from the command line. By clicking a few buttons, you can monitor data as it streams over your network--especially useful for checking web traffic, network bottlenecks, or even suspicious network activity. All network data is displayed in the application itself, and you can save the data to a file for further analysis later. PacketStream provides a user-friendly way to configure and use the Mac's network monitoring tools. It is easier than typing in cryptic commands in Terminal. As a native Aqua application, it is more intuitive to use than complex, hard-to-install, Unix-based GUI programs. And it is simpler than more expensive "swiss army knife" network programs, which are overkill for most users.

What's new in this version:

  • Numerous improvements and bug fixes for compatability with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5):
  • Visual integration: New large icons.
  • Stability: No longer crashes when saving file or accessing help menu.
  • Additional UI enhancements: Native notebook tabs; toolbar now toggles visibility via window toolbutton.
  • Better performance when running network scan.
  • Updated to most recent Tcl/Tk libraries (8.5).

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4

PacketStream ReviewSlow, Worthless - Version: 2.3, 2/14/2008 12:00AM PST

This thing takes forever to get started (force quit it the first time because I thought it was hung up). Once it's started it's really, really slow to update. It displays a watch cursor or beach ball most of the time. Totally unusable. And he's trying to charge MONEY for this? Right.

This is quite an improvement over 2.1. The interface has dramatically improved. The buttons now look more Mac-like. Now to get rid of the jagginess of the search field. I also like not having to open the hierarchal tree for the different ports that you can monitor and not having to confirm that I wish to quit the application every time. The help documentation is actually useful now and gives a brief introduction to the tcpdump command. Good work overall!

There is a small improvement that I would like to see in the autoupdate feature. It would be nice to actually view the progress when it is downloading the new version. Something like what the Sparkle framework does where it shows the remaining amount of data to download that updates as it finishes.

PacketStream Reviewyeah I gotta agree with the other complaints here - Version: 2.1, 5/28/2007 07:37PM PST

And furthermore, for me there is no difference in the basic, detailed, or highly detailed level of program output.

And still more... this thing phones home every startup, with no way to turn it off in prefs (Little Snitch to the rescue). What is it doing exactly... version check... or something more sinister?

I'll check it out again at v4 or so. 2.1 is waaaay too far away from anything useful.
