This program is exactly what I wanted. Until Apple provides a fix for this issue, I'll be using Shades. You've saved my retinas! Muah!
wonderful!!!

absolutely fantastic. nice polish and functionality. i would pay a shareware fee, but for now, will donate $10.00 to continued development.
my new 24" imac was burning my eyes out until i found this great app. my new 24" imac is so ridiculously bright, and the normal brightness control in display system prefs only dims the display to what i would call a normal brightness. it was unbearable working at night with the room lights dimmed.
btw, thanks to the reviewers about screen calibration. i will check into this, although, after turning on shades my calibration looks perfect to my naked eye.

I love it!

It really works well, with a customizable slider in the menu bar.

I made the mistake of dragging the slider all the way to black , just to test it out. Sure enough I lost the slider into the darkness, and was unable to get the screen to be visible again, and had to actually do a hard re-boot, which subsequently corrupted directories on my external drives. USE WITH CAUTION — this thing is dangerous.

I've been using Shades for a while, and like it a lot. But when I made a screen profile resently (with Color Eyes Display Pro) I noticed that changing profiles in Screen Preferences acted strange. I then turned Shades off, and the newly made profile made the screen turn green!
I made a new profile with Shades turned off, and things work now.
So if you don't care about profiling your screen, then Shades is very nice. But if you calibrate your screen, then I think it's a no good, at least for the time being.

CPU usage - Version: 1.2b1, 12/14/2007 02:12PM PST

Great app and low CPU usage while running (an avarage of 0,05%)
But when Shades is actively used, for instance when I'm logging into my system and Shades starts or when altering a setting, the CPU usage is HUGE, with peaks of 48% CPU!! (2.4 Ghz intel processor)
I know it is only for a short period (1 - 2 seconds) but losing almost 50% of the CPU simply can't be a good thing.

Much thanks to developers for this outstanding application and saving my eyes. iMac 24 have a very big brightness and Brightness Control application can't solve this problem because when i am try to use it i always get crashing monitor color calibration and all desktop looks as shit. I will recommend to all iMac and other apple computers users. :)
BRILLIANT!!

I was so affected by the brightness of my 20" iMac screen I bought a filter that cost me over £100! If only I had this application sooner. It is just great. Thanks a million! Now I can take off the filter and my computer looks great again.
Shades puts the adjuster scale right through the internet site, so I can always adjust it easily. At £0 it is presently a lot cheaper than the filter I bought. Totally recommend this - especially if you suffer from headaches and eye strain.

Shades is one of the best applications I have downloaded for my iMac. It works perfectly until I upgraded to snow leopard. After the upgrade, the Shades Preferences became unresponsive and the shades program cannot be shut off and restarted, also, the brightness bar on the menu cannot be tuned and it is stuck at the level of brightness prior to the upgrade.
I'm not sure if others are having the same issues, thanks again for this great product!
