Product Description:

Shades is a FREE utility for controlling the brightness of your screen. It runs in the background providing easy control over the brightness of your display via a slick Mac-like interface, with greater dynamic range and finer granularity than the built-in controls.

Unlike other solutions, Shades works by obscuring your screen with a darkened overlay. It doesn't change your display settings and won't screw up your colour profile. It also means you won't lose your cursor!

What's new in this version:

  • [fix] Shades no longer writes hundreds of lines of debug code into the console when launched.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

Shades ReviewI love it! - Version: 1.2b2, 12/15/2007 01:13PM PST

It really works well, with a customizable slider in the menu bar.

I made the mistake of dragging the slider all the way to black , just to test it out. Sure enough I lost the slider into the darkness, and was unable to get the screen to be visible again, and had to actually do a hard re-boot, which subsequently corrupted directories on my external drives. USE WITH CAUTION — this thing is dangerous.

Shades ReviewDoes affect screen calibration - Version: 1.2b2, 12/15/2007 11:16AM PST

I've been using Shades for a while, and like it a lot. But when I made a screen profile resently (with Color Eyes Display Pro) I noticed that changing profiles in Screen Preferences acted strange. I then turned Shades off, and the newly made profile made the screen turn green!
I made a new profile with Shades turned off, and things work now.
So if you don't care about profiling your screen, then Shades is very nice. But if you calibrate your screen, then I think it's a no good, at least for the time being.
