OmniGrowl CommentaryAhem.. geektool replacement? - Version: 3.7, 9/23/2009 11:47AM PST

Paradoxial
What is that line doing in the program updates? "Since OmniGrowl handles everything, this is a much better solution for GeekTool users than anything currently available (just try it)."

I have OmniGrown AND GeekTool, and they fulfill totally different niches. I don't see OmniGrowl running shell scripts, and nor should it. They're different, and that's good. But the unnecessary and ill-advised jab at GeekTool is pretty unprofessional, and is enough to make me think twice about using OmniGrowl.

OmniGrowl ReviewA very useful application - Version: 3.6.2, 9/15/2009 01:50AM PST

I've been using OmniGrowl for quite a long time, and I do really miss it now when it's on a machine that's not installed. The developers have generally been pretty quick to address problems (though I haven't interacted with them directly), and it's otherwise been pretty unobtrusive. I would definitely recommend this. I haven't seen (at least in any recent version) problems with the preferences pane always coming up, it works as advertised. I haven't tried everything it can do, but I have tried the RSS feeds, weather, iTunes notifications, log notifications, SMART notifications, and iCal notifications, and all work just as they're supposed to.

Grrr. No uninstall option! I'm sick of the dane thing asking me every time if I want to make it a start-up item. I already said yes a hundred times, then I started to say no. Now I want to uninstall it. Can't.

OmniGrowl CommentaryThe prefix 'Omni' confused me too - Version: 3.3, 9/2/2008 07:07AM PST

I've followed the Omni group from their origins as a NeXT developer through their establishing themselves as a premier Mac OSX developer. I get excited when I see a new Omni application, as I've come to expect I'll find something extremely well thought out, well designed and useful, and more often than not an application that I'll be able to use and immediately get value from.

Not wanting to knock OmniGrowl as a product, as it may very well be useful and well designed, but it's use of 'Omni' in the application title doesn't seem to have any basis in the functionality of the product, and it's not an Omni application, which I found very disappointing.

I can appreciate that this developer has reasons for using the name, and hopefully they are not in the hopes of getting more attention than would be received with a less confusing name. I would suggest that using Omni for a software product isn't unlike using 'Coke' for a soft drink, or 'Mercedes' for an automobile - even if you think you've got a legal loophole, it's still not good practice as you're misleading your and Omni's potential customers, and that's just not good business.

Very pleased with it & sent the Developer my $ to register.

Preference window bug has been fixed.

I love Growl and this integrates very well with it as well as with some of your more popular Mac apps.

I look forward to seeing more apps working with Growl, and thus even more uses for OmniGrowl in the future!

OmniGrowl Developer Noteknown minor issue with 3.0 - Version: 3.0, 6/27/2008 01:02PM PST

(1 of 1 users found this comment useful)

Wooden Brain
It has been reported by several people that OmniGrowl 3.0 is opening its preference window at startup even though that option is not checked. I consider this top priority for a fix, but unfortunately I am on vacation until July 3 and have no access to the source to fix it. It will be fixed by July 7 or earlier. Sorry for the inconvenience.

If there are any other issues besides this one please report them to woodenbrain at kagi dot com so a proper maintenance release can be produced ASAP after my return.

OmniGrowl CommentaryFor Casuistry, Perhaps? - Version: 2.5, 5/31/2008 03:24AM PST

To add a wee bit to the previous "omni" discussion: I like that this smaller company is standing its ground. (I think it's an underdog thing, here!) It has just as much right to use the prefix as the other, larger company. However, OmniGroup has stature and WoodenBrain's software may ofttimes erroneously be associated with that company, which could be a good or bad thing! Looking at OmniWeb - the web browser put forth by OmniGroup - they have put out pretty good software, so perhaps it will be a good thing.

Also, due to the association, the onus is WoodenBrain to at least match the quality reputation of OmniGroup.

At the moment, however, there is no apparent reason WoodenBrain should not use the name if they wish.

This may end as a bartering matter, a smoldering matter, or perhaps it will lend itself to a casuistry arena one day.

I haven't had time to play around with OmniGrowl but it sounds like a very handy utility. I just hope it works "omni-"efficaciously!

My Mac Pro, OS X 10.5.2, won't sleep with this version either. 2.3 had same problem. Occurred since the 10.5.1 or .2 update, as it did work before.

Cheers, Al

Using Omni in the product title implies that the App may be built by Omni Group http://www.omnigroup.com The developer of this app should change the name to avoid further confusion.

Once I discovered how to not have it open the Address Book and iCal each time I launch, I find this program very handy. Reminds me of appointments and birthdays. Very nice.
