drag an archive to Zipeg, preview a file from inside the archive or simply pull it out to extract - no manual needed, fast and reliable

Zipeg ReviewGreat utility! - Version: 2.0.0.777, 11/11/2007 03:38AM PST

I agree with the previous comments: this is the kind of utility you can't do without as soon as you start using it!
It's not mentioned, but it launches even by dragging the archive on the application's icon, an alias, or even the icon on the dock, or a 'DragThing' dock.

Zipeg ReviewIt is good to have the same unzipper on both Mac and Windows - Version: 1.3.0.567, 8/19/2007 02:14AM PST

It is not as powerful as WinZip, StuffIt, WinRar or BetterZip. But it is free and it handles extremely large archives in a very fast way. Simple. Sometimes less is more.

Zipeg ReviewUnzips PK v4.6 archives - Version: 1.3.0, 5/21/2007 03:12PM PST

This program works on PKZip v4.6 archives.
The unzip utility built into Tiger says,
need PK compat. v4.6 (can do v2.1)

Four stars because I wish it would let me drag a file out of the archive and onto the desktop or a folder.

Zipeg ReviewVery useful but lacks one feature... - Version: 1.2.1.334, 12/26/2006 04:08AM PST

I have found this to be easy to use, fast, and not at all ugly because it is in Java (mmaybe because it is so much nicer that Windows zip programs). I would love to use this as my regular unzipper, but it lacks one very important feature: Zipeg cannot read or extract encrypted zip files.

BetterZip does have this feature, and some of the browsing ability of Zipeg, but it cannot show the icons or allow inspection to the degree that Zipeg does.

Maybe I'm in the minority, but until Zipeg adds the ability to decrypt (with password, of course) WinZip files, it cannot be my main unzipper.

Zipeg ReviewWonderful! Makes zips that much more useful - Version: 1.2.0, 12/19/2006 09:01AM PST

I've always been surprised that there was no good low-cost utility to do this for ZIP files. I remember doing this with various compressed formats about a decade ago, and could not figure out why no one had made a free (or donation) program to do it for ZIPs.

Think about how useful it is to peek into a large archive to see if you compressed something as part of a large group. Or, being able to pull out just one file, rather than decompressing thousands.

The look is a little ugly since it is Java-based, but the developer did a good job making it friendly enough. Would love to see a Cocoa-native version some day, but this is great for now!

Zipeg Developer NoteDeveloper Note: Why bother? ZIP + JPEG = ZIPEG :-) - Version: 1.0.1, 12/10/2006 11:20AM PST

Dear Zipeg User,

Here is some explanation of why yet another archive extractor?

I basically developed it for myself at first because I liked WinZip on Windows and lacked ease of archive browsing when I switched to OS X. Though there are many other archivers I needed something that reflects my un-archiver usage pattern.

I've noticed that I rarely create zip files myself but when friends send me photos from the last party I want to preview them before extracting all.

All modern digital JPEG photographs contains tiny EXIF header with a thumbnail in it. Zipeg extracts and shows this thumbnail, and let me decide which files I really want to unzip.

Frequently, when installing open source software, I usually unzip into the same directory first (namely e.g. /User/leo/tmp/<archive name>/) and than work from there.

And in some occasions, I want to navigate inside the archive and simply drag and drop single file or image to desktop without unzipping all 100,000 files from my svn-tar-ball.

I understand that in a way Zipeg is inferior to some of the Bigger Brothers - but I want to develop it further, add more formats and simple to use features.

I would love to hear your comments, critique and suggestions for further development. I enjoyed making it for you. Hope you will find it useful.

Enjoy.
