Tangerine! ReviewQuestionable Choices - Version: 1.1, 2/25/2007 08:19AM PST

Tangerine is a great concept... but for the steep price I’d expect better analyzing capabilities and better AI (or shall we call it common sense?). I had Eric Serra’s “Deep Blue Dream” from the soundtrack for “The Big Blue” mixed together with Elvis Presley’s “Heartbreak Hotel.” Come again??

The addition of presets in the playlists, which allows for selection by genres of music, iTunes playlists etc. makes for a greatly improved and more useful app. Now it's fun to tinker around with the slick UI. The playlist view is very polished, sort of like the clip viewer in iMovie, but as an album artwork bar chart.

It was a little irritating that I wasn't able to change the value of the checkboxes on previously saved presets (such as "Do not allow duplicate songs" etc.) without invoking a new custom preset, but this is a minor issue.

Upcoming releases are supposed to improve on the music analysis, which is needed at this point; the BPM algorithm made several mistake with my iTunes library, which were not multiple of 2 errors, and therefore not remedied by the option of doubling or halving the counts. Luckily there's a BPM calculator that allows for manual fine tuning and corrections.

Tangerine! Developer NoteVersion 1.1 has presets and rules - Version: 1.1, 1/17/2007 05:01PM PST

Hi, developer of Tangerine! here.

I just wanted to note to the few commenters here that version 1.1 introduces presets and rules in the new playlist sheet. It lets you create playlists from specific genres, playlists, artists, etc. The rule editor is improved so that you can pick a bunch of items. You won't have to have one rule for each genre you want to exclude, for example.

Please try it out and send us feedback if you think it needs improvements. Thank you!

Tangerine! ReviewSo close, but missing essential features. - Version: 1.0.1, 1/16/2007 03:35AM PST

=can't select within iTunes playlists. can't easily select from certain genres of music.

For example, if I want to create a playlist within Tangerine that selects just House and Techno (leaving out all else), the only way to do this is to create rules in the preferences. Because the rules are exclusionary only, I end up having to do the following: "match ALL the following conditions", "genre IS NOT House", "genre IS NOT Techno". THIS is the way to get Tangerine! to select from my iTunes library only House and Techno...

Ugh...

Well, maybe part of the appeal for some is to end up with Coltrane crammed in there between Orbital and Kelis... Not for me, thanks.

Developer, I suggest that you consider changing the name of your product so that end users are not confused by another product which bears the same name. Tangerine, (without the exclamation point), is a color management system, also available here, and on other Mac software sites. Ironically, both your and their product currently stand at version 1.0.1, which makes it all the more confusing.

Allow me to offer an alternative name for your product:

Tipsy

Tangerine iTunes Playlist System

Get it? T...I...P...Sy

Just a suggestion.

Tangerine! Reviewmeh - Version: 1.0, 12/9/2006 01:24AM PST

I would probably buy this if it would give me the option of generating a tangerine playlist from a pre-existing playlist or a specific genre of music. As it is, or at least, as it appears to me, the program groups tracks together solely on the basis of BPM and beat intensity, which can lead to some pretty jarring results when there is a large variety of types of music in one's collection. If I want a sequence of BPM organized techno, it would be nice not to have to weed out the jazz and classical tracks by hand from the generated playlist, and vice-versa.

Now what would make this app irrisitible well into several update cycles would be configurable generation patterns...

Tangerine! ReviewIt Rocks! - Version: 1.0, 12/8/2006 09:31AM PST

This program rocks. It makes great playlists quickly, simply, and well.

I now make 3 types of playlists all the time in iTunes:

Mellow: low BPM
Moderate: medium BPM
Crankin!: high BPM

Must have if you have a shuffle, because you can tune your shuffle to your mood.
