Product Description:

Using Drive-in you can create an image of a DVD disc on your laptop or home entertainment system. The image preserves the quality, navigation and special features of the original DVD and can be played using Apple's DVD Player or Front Row.

Drive-in preserves the DVD's original content protection. Drive-in allows you to play your images on any computer that you own but does not allow you to share your images with others.

To simplify the way you search and access your videos, we've added some helpful information like the DVD cover art, names of actors, movie description, etc. Once you've stored movies to your hard drive - just browse, select and play!
Drive-in is a great tool for:

Laptop owners who like to watch movies on the go
DVD collectors with a home theater system
Families who often misplace or damage DVDs

While you can create DVD images for free using this public beta, you must purchase the final release if you wish to use those images, or create new ones, after the beta testing period has ended.

What's new in this version:

  • This public beta will expire on August 1, 2008.

Flip4Mac Drive-in CommentaryNot Ready for Release - Version: 1.0.0.71, 5/2/2008 07:21AM PST

There is some weirdness going on... I tried 2 DVDs and after it finished with either one, it went into a prolonged beach-ball... both the application AND the Finder. I was simply trying to eject the physical DVD. Eventually, it returned control, but it was lost for way too long.

On the UI front, when I re-launched it, I expected to see my "library" but found I had to specifically access it using GetFile. As such, it does NOT remember window position or size.

I have 2 DVDs in one "container" as both are from the same film. BUT I can NOT edit the title of each to show which disc it is.

Another issue is that it will NOT include some of the DVDs have created using my own video... it seems it won't do anything unless you HAD a bar code number.

Of course, the real kicker has nothing to do with the developer and everything to do with the fruit... this program would be FABULOUS if we could "play" the DVDs through the Apple TV to our big TVs. Without that component, I'm afraid there's not much use for it.

This software still puzzles me though - even though it is installing a new protection mechanism, it is defeating the original CSS one, which would seem to be against either the wording or the intent of the DMCA. (I'm not an expert, since the DMCA doesn't apply to me.)

It's the equivalent of me breaking into your house and then standing guard to protect your valuables from other people.

Hello,

My first impression of this program was jaw dropping. I love how they really made this program fit the Mac OS look. The elegant/artistic assembly of this program makes it very fun to use. Not only is this program great to look at, but it is also easy to use. All you do is double click on an image (Cover) and boom your playing the DVD. And copying that movie couldn't be any easier, all you do is insert the disc, open it in Drive-In, and hit create image. You can add multiple images to one DVD Case, which is one of my favorite things about this program. The program's ability to gather information from Amazon can be helpful however I love that you are not bound to it. You can just as easily add your own information and DVD Covers.

As others are saying there are free ways to copy DVDs to one's hard drive. However, that isn't the point of this program. This program first off takes use of "Fair Use" and secondly, unlike the free programs it is a lot easier, and much more attractive to use and work with. Unlike other sources such as MactheRipper you are not just left with a folder. This program creates beautiful DVD Cover icons which displays your DVDs like as if they were in your library.

Also other are comparing this to Handbrake. I use Handbrake and the two are not the same. Lets compare Apples to Apples here. Drive-In allows you to copy DVDs (no compression) Lossless copies to your Hard Drive. Handbrake on the other hand compresses your movies and converts them to another format other than DVD (MPEG-2). Both have their purposes but to compare Handbrake and Drive-In I don't think is fair.

If you are a fan, of DVD movies yet hate the hassle of starches or missing Discs then Drive-In is for you. While it can be expensive to copy all those DVDs to your Mac's Hard Drives I find that as Hard Drive prices drop more and more people will find this useful. As for the $50.00 price tag, I think that is reasonable for all the graphics and beauty you will get with using this program.

I find this program very useful and plan to buy this once it is out of its beta stages. Great work on this Application.
