Product Description:

Xslimmer reduces the disk space taken up by Mac OS X applications removing localizations you don't need, and preserving just the Intel or PowerPC version of the code in Universal Binaries.

Xslimmer is a new, user-friendly way to size down your Mac OS X apps, removing the code inside the Universal Binaries that does not fit with your machine's architecture, and deleting the localizations you don't need.

This is done in a safely way backing up your apps before slimming, downloading a "blacklist" of apps that check themselves, or allowing you to exclude any application, folder or path.

What's new in this version:

Xslimmer 1.5.1 increases compatibility with some apps by improving the 64-bit handling logic and being resilient to not perfectly well-formed application bundles, as detailed below. Some visual improvements have also been performed.

  • Adjustments in 64-bit handling code. Some weeks after the release of Leopard, real-life 64-bit code is starting to show. We've identified several apps whose main process is compiled for 32-bit Intel processors, but nevertheless include third party libraries compiled with support for 64-bit architectures. In this situation, only the 32-bit version of the code will run; however, previous versions of Xslimmer preserved the 64-bit version of the libraries on capable machines. This has been changed so that the best architecture available for the main binary will also be the target to apply to the rest of libraries and frameworks in the bundle. As a result, compatibility of Xslimmer with these mixed-binary apps is increased.
  • Support for redundant or malformed localization folders. Some applications include duplicate localization folders that target the same actual localization. For example, we've found apps containing "en.lproj" and "English.lproj" folders, both of them containing resources that apply to the same English language version of the app. In previous versions of Xslimmer, one of the folders was deleted if the user chose to keep his apps in English language only. In Xslimmer 1.5.1, all folders that contain resources for the chosen languages will be kept, even if the bundle structure sports a non-standard layout.
  • Nested applications in Xslimmer backups are automatically ignored by the Genie.
  • Visual improvements. The status bar text showed too deep a shadow in Leopard 10.5.2, which has been fixed. This effect was a consequence of a previous workaround in our code to overcome a bug that affected Leopard 10.5 and 10.5.1 :)
  • Localizations. There was a typo in the Dutch translation of the Slim! button. The label is now correctly shown as Afslanken!

Xslimmer CommentaryOne glaring flaw? - Version: 1.7.4.1, 9/21/2009 06:36AM PST

Diks Toosl
This would suddenly become more worth buying if it would identify non-universal binaries & refuse to strip them of code (specifically, XSlimmer can't say 'oops, this is only PPC code, better NOT strip the PPC code from this file!, or User won't be able to run it at all'.

Allowing to the user to brute-force it is tolerable, but more in line w/ freeware than payware.

Xslimmer ReviewThis is NOT shareware! - Version: 1.7.4, 9/16/2009 08:47AM PST

This is trialware – NOT shareware: until you pay US $ 14,95 you can free up only 50MB!

App developers like that can go scru themselves, afaic.
