Product Description:
CoolBook lets you monitor CPU frequency, voltage and temperature. Registered users may set voltage and frequency manually. This can dramatically reduce heat dissipation, and fan noise. Use your MacBook with full performance without battery. This will reduce battery aging.

I wish I were more technically-expert. But I am aware from my limited experience in other sub-categories of electronics and electrical engineering that lower-than-designed voltage can be undesirable, even dangerous.

I bought a 1.83Ghz Core Duo Macbook back 2 years ago, and temperatures would get uncomfortably high--in the mid 80s. So I looked for a solution and found this. I was familiar with overclocking and undervolting from my PC days, so this was very exciting to see that undervolting was available for the Mac!
My temperatures dropped into the high 60s, which is amazing in itself. The icing on the cake, though, is that the lowered voltages also lower the power consumption of the laptop, so my battery lasts regularly into 4 hour region. I was unimpressed with my new 2.53Ghz 13" Macbook Pro's battery life I just purchased last week--until I found out that the next version of Coolbook works with that.
One thing to be aware of is that you probably want a full backup--Carbon Copy Cloner works great--before you do much undervolting. I just messed up my new Leopard installation because of too low voltages, but luckily I have a Time Machine backup that will bring me back. However, this is only a minor setback that is just part of the nature of undervolting. The results once obtained are so worth it.
Pay the $10 for it. You won't be sorry.

Apparently, MacBook Airs tend to overheat because of the custom, squished cpu that they contain. My wife's macbook has been doing this a great deal lately, and when it happens, the duo-core drops one core out of the cpu and throttles the processor down to such a degree that the machine becomes unusable. After scratching my head and researching this problem on the net, I cam across CoolBook and decided that $10 was a reasonable risk to take to try to get her machine behaving again.
It took me a few minutes to figure out that the point is to decrease voltages at any given clock-speed and build a set of "optimized" clockspeed-vs-voltage settings that coolbook would then throttle between in it's custom kernel module. Once I figured all of this out and took the time to find the correct settings and put a maximum temperature setting in place (85C worked fine for me - apparently the cpu has to get hotter than this to misbehave), her laptop went from overheating to purring like a kitten. It still runs at full speed, but now the fan doesn't scream, the machine doesn't drop a core or choke on itself and everything just works as it should have when we purchased it at the apple store. As a bonus, her battery now lasts almost an hour longer.
This product is worth much more than $10 if you are experiencing problems with a MBA. Highly recommended.
