Product Description:

Vine Viewer allows you to remotely control another computer anywhere on the internet through a VNC server.

Vine Viewer has a wealth of uses: Helpdesk, education, remote system administration, telecommuting and family technical support, to name a few. Use it to transfer files easily between machines with Vine Server. Another unique application is its ability to support Multiple Desktop Sessions on the same computer.

When used with Vine Server/OSXvnc 2.0 (included in the package) it also allows:

What's new in this version:

  • Added warnings when launching or setting a system server with no password set.
  • Added a new -maxdepth argument to limit incoming connections..
  • Added a new -maxauths to limit brute force VNC server attacks.
  • Fixed a problem with keyboard events being impacted by local modifer keys (like CapsLock and Command).
  • Fixed a problem detecting "self connection loops" where we are providing our own Pasteboard Data.
  • Fixed a problem with multiple users launching the same copy of Vine Server.
  • Fixed a problem with launching Vine Server when our own Host Name can't be determined.
  • Host name is retrieved in a separate thread to prevent hanging the app when DNS isn't setup.
  • Improvements to performance when accessing clipboard data.
  • Removed spurious log messages when accessing clipboard dat.
  • Changed install permissions to 755 for increased security.
  • Defaults to storing the .osxvncauth files to the users home directory.

i'd be all over this, were it not for the $30 fee PER COMPUTER YOU WANT TO USE IT ON. i do a lot of vnc'ing to/from multiple computers. the vine server is free, but the viewer is $30 per computer and i think that's unfair, it's just a way to lock down use of the program and force you to buy more copies. if i buy a copy, shouldn't i be able to use it anywhere i want, so long as i'm the only one using my registered copy?

i use alternative vnc viewers and look forward to experimenting with leopard's new built-in vnc so i can avoid bad deals like this.

* Default color depth in application preferences to control default color depth on reverse connections.

* Automatic replacement of servers in the viewer's connection list that used reverse connection to get through the server's firewall. Currently, you mast manually delete old connections even if they have the same IP. Feels like the reverse connection feature is an afterthought.

Even with these two items on my wish list, this is still the best viewer I've used and already worth the money.

I wish I had not waited so long to try/buy this VNC client. With Vine Server (I haven't tested it any other way, since Vine Server is my number one free VNC server for OSX), this is by far the fastest remote client I have ever used, including SpyMe (slower and much less stable). I am thrilled with the performance of the Vine combo. For me, nothing has come close. It's very near real time performance when set to Thousands of Colors, which is plenty good enough resolution for me on a remote machine.

My deep thanks to the developers for the hotrod of OSX VNC clients.
