Adobe Acrobat Pro CommentaryAdobe don't seem to want Mac business - Version: 9.0, 10/31/2008 12:03AM PST

I have spent a week trying to buy Acrobat form Adobe. They do not make a standard version 9 for Mac as yet and will not sell the version 8 which can run on Mac. They suggested I buy the Professional version, as I am in the UK this cost about 4 times as much as the standard version 9 (Windows only) from the US. All I want the program for is so I can fill in PDF forms and save them, which I am not even certain I can do. Adobe offer a free trial of Acrobat 9 Professional, but you guessed it, only on Windows.

I can vaguely understand that itunes confines people to purchasing a download from the store in their own country due to copy write problems on third party products, but why do Adobe do it? The cost from UK store is bout twice the price of the US, although as the dollar strengthens the difference is shrinking Acrobat Pro from US $449 from the UK UKP522 (as of today that is = US$850) for a download.

Looking at the Adobe website, it says that this is for Windows. Period.

Adobe Acrobat Pro ReviewAcrobat 9 is a nightmare! - Version: 9.0, 7/9/2008 09:29AM PST

I just updated from Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional. I *used* to be able to print ANY Microsoft Office document (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) by using the floating PDF icon on the palette in the Office application. This now DOES NOT WORK with the new (improved) Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro software.

Installing this *upgrade* has broken all of this functionality. ALSO: Within the Acrobat 9 Pro software, you create a PDF by going to the File Menu —> Create PDF —> from file and then select the file you want to convert to a pdf.

This too DOES NOT WORK with any MS-Office document, from either the new Office 2008 for Mac or the prior Office 2004. The error message states: "Acrobat could not open xxxx.docx because it is either not a supported file type..."

Again, NO Office document is supported. THE ONLY WAY to create a PDF is to *PRINT* to the Acrobat 9 printer driver. THIS IS CRAZY. Why would Adobe release an 'upgrade' which breaks functions (and obvious/basic ones at that) from its previous Acrobat 8 Professional software?!!

Would it really be so hard to use the Macintosh interface on the Macintosh version of Acrobat? Other companies do it with far more complex software. But for some reason, Adobe can't figure it out.

Adobe Acrobat Pro CommentaryWhat is going on here? - Version: 9.0, 6/27/2008 05:52AM PST

We've finally gotten version 8 Pro to be stable in our environment and v9 comes out with no real good features or fixes?! Of course we'll be forced to upgrade to it so we can have support for our issues on over 500 or so Macs.. But Adobe has it all wrong- they should develop a core application and offer plugins for the functionality added in this upgrade. Want Flash in your documents?-- we have a plugin you can purchase for that. But forcing people to pony up $299 or whatever it costs for an upgrade is robbery. I usually side with Adobe and love their products but the company makes some awful decisions that usually hurts the loyal users.

This is why people would rather pirate software instead of buy it legally!

Adobe Acrobat Pro ReviewAdobe update and security nonsense - Version: 9.0, 6/27/2008 03:50AM PST

I updated to Pro 8.0 a few months ago. Adobe Standard 7.09 (well, actually it was 7.0, and I had to do about 6 patches to get it to .09) that came with with my Fujitsu scanner (a very good product by the way). Now, there had been no security updates for 7.09 for months and months, which is the reason I bought pro. Lo and behold, three months after after acrobat 8 pro is released (you can't buy standard for the mac anymore; that would be too cheap!), Adobe releases 7.1, which has security updates. This seems like absolutely unethical behavior. Now that 9 is out, with useless features (how many users really need to put flash in their adobe documents? Come on! And a lot of this collaborative stuff was in Adobe 8.1 already), they can end-of-life the 7 series. So security updates will come out quickly for 9, and slowly for 8.1 (I bet). The cost for me to update my several month old Adobe Pro? $159. $159 for an update! Geez, generous. This program not only eats money, but devours memory and disk space like a champ. Avoid, avoid, avoid. I'm sure 9 will be worse. And it is unclear how to do the simplest operations. I was trying to add text, and it told me I didn't have the font in my system, therefore I couldn't add text. Well then give me an easily found setting to use some other font! And recently distiller crashed trying to print a simple document. Grrr, I hate this program, and this company.

When is Adobe ever going to realize that they keep adding stuff on top of stuff to Acrobat, and none of it has any kind of a workflow? Have they ever even tried to make "interactive" Acrobat documents with this thing? Waaaay too many small and poorly designed dialog boxes, way too many clicks, and heaven forbid there are any changes to be made.

It seems like several other Adobe products - they make it, but they don't actually use it. They just keep adding half-baked features with no practical way to get at them. Yes, it is possible to do all of these things, but no, they don't bother to spend any time making it elegant to do so. Not very Mac-like at all. Better off sticking with tools like Preview or Skim.

This is just more Adobe marketing without adding any value.

I'm waiting for Acrobat 10 Pro Extended Super Deluxe 3D Builder.

Adobe products continue to get worse and worse and Acrobat is notorious for paving the way. Adobe Acrobat 9 is no exception. The Microsoft-esque marketing is downright embarassing, i.e., Standard, Pro, and Pro Extended, with Standard and Pro Extended being Windows only but Pro is for both Mac and Windows – such a nice little convoluted touch that many are coming to expect from Adobe. Once upon a time Adobe was a reputable company who focused on quality; the Adobe of today is a testament to the unavoidable life-cycle of a growing company—that which was once Roman…

PROS
A new version is another step towards the enlightenment of unaware users. Yet another version of Acrobat, further bloated with more needless bells and whistles, increases the chance that unaware users will begin to recognize the deceptive pattern and begin to realize they deserve and should demand better for their money.

CONS
- Transparent marketing scheme reveals more effort invested in smoke screen than product quality (think introduction of the “CS” racket-ah the Bruce Chizen legacy lives on)
-Upgrade pricing schemes are asinine-why customers put up with it I have no idea
- WIth the currently burgeoning, more sophisticated mobile computing experience, the world is in need of a more optimized format and in turn more responsible tools that don’t promote the addition of senseless, resource wasting features.
- Adobe continuing their love for feature creep

Adobe Acrobat Pro CommentaryIs This Worth The Upgrade? - Version: 9.0, 6/26/2008 03:56PM PST

Adobe are having a tough time lately. But I'll hold back my tears and simply provide some information to help us decide if this version 9 thing is worth our attention.

1) Is Acrobat 9 actually available for Mac OS X today? - YES, but:
- Examining the information Adobe provide about v9 on their website:
- - a) The 'Standard' version is ONLY for Windows (at this point in time).
- - b) The "Pro" version is for Windows or for Mac.
- - c) The "Pro Extended" version is ONLY for Windows (at this point in time).

2) Is Acrobat 9 Pro (the only Mac version so far) specifically compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard? - YES.

3) Has Acrobat 9 actually caught up to Mac OS X Cocoa 64 bit computing? - NO.
- I can't find any indication that Adobe have caught up with Mac OS X yet.
- Adobe point out that the Windows version can run in either the 64 bit or 32 bit versions of Windows, but I don't care. Where is the 64 bit Mac version?

Happy Smiley Stuff about the "Pro" version:
- The MOSX version requires 1.42 GB of HD space.
- The Windows version requires 2.13 GB of HD space. - HA HA!

My POV = I'm gonna wait for the Cocoa 64 bit version.

Despite what previous reviewer seemed to find- apparently version for mac is available the adobe download page has some comments that apply only to windows not to say that only windows version is available

however $200 to upgrade from 6 month old professional version is criminal
