Synk Pro Reviewsolid product - Version: 6.2, 10/23/2007 09:38AM PST

I've been using Sync Pro for several months now. Prior to v6.2, it was pretty buggy. It didn't crash much, but had lots of problems with deciding whether a file needed backing up. (Have a look at the Synk forums at the developers site for an accurate snapshot of the problems people are having with the software.) v6.2 however is a very solid product. No crashes and handles my backup needs without errors. The best feature of Synk is that it has a daemon that can do all the backup chores without the main app running. Very convenient. The only issues I have now is that the new GUI in v6.2 was initially a bit confusing, and Synk doesn't gracefully deal with scheduled backup operations to network drives when I disconnect my computer (laptop) from the network for travel. It doesn't crash, but scheduled operations don't automatically resume when reconnecting to the network. I've been told that the authors are working on this though.

Synk Pro ReviewCrash, crash, crash... - Version: 6.2, 9/22/2007 04:47PM PST

I've been evaluating he Pro and Standard versions with a view to purchasing one of them...
The Pro version crashes *every* time I use it. And although it is not unuseable, it is really unstable.
On numerous occaisions I've had to kill the process to close it down, as it just locks up.
I can't see a huge difference between the Pro and Standard versions, although the Standard version is a lot more stable... and appears to have all the functionality that I need. The standard version has only crashed a few times. And does appear to be be a better option.
The functionality and options provided in the app are excellent, and do appear to work well... although the option to 'remove files from target that are not in the source' does not appear to work all the time.
The Pro version... thumbs down (big time) unless they can work out the instabilities.
The Standard version... thumbs up!!

Very promising product so far, BUT:
- Appl silently crashes. IF still availaible, but no mouse , no keyboard hardly recognized. Think this should be fixed. Sooner or later.

-Buttons unrepsonsive: In various cases the appl didn’t respond at all. This was positively the case when finder copies took place (Firewire)

-Finally the appl refused to start at all. Never retried. Trashed.

-Cancel button doesn’t work: Example: Trying to do do a backup. Starting. Looking at the BA process I see a huge file that is esentially obsolete. I hit "cancel". What happens? Nothing. The appl tells me that it will stop when the current task may be accomplished. Or something like that.
But, the task I wished to stop was exactly the current task. Did anybody get it? "Cancel" means cancel. Point.

OK. This is a very nice atempt. But full of bugs. Apperently plenty. This thing should be priced at max.10$ or donation ware.

@the devellopper: don’t get me wrong. I tested your sw with various ba solutions. I’m in the process of changing completely ma ba strategy/HW (only 2 cpu’s and 4 external disks, 1 shared). Your SW failed.

Neverteheless I will encourage you to kepp up the good work. As said before, it’s more than promising.

Synk Pro ReviewAmazing apart from crashes - Version: 6.1.1, 9/1/2007 09:14AM PST

This is on its way to becoming the best sync tool out there - but it crashes way too often and it's a real shame!

It's a bit hard to tell whether something has synchronized successfully or not after a crash and the overview is a bit flawed and confusing - I have lots of different folders to sync and now I don't know which have synced and which haven't. Then I have to go through one by one and check what's going on. Some will say it's "Running" when in fact it isn't - it just freezes in "running" mode after the crash.
Also, renaming is buggy - after doing a preview or a run if you try to rename a script it won't let you until you restart the app.
It also won't allow you to change a folder, you have to delete it and add it again.

I would happily buy this if it worked as all the other sync apps out there suck real bad :-(

Please guys, fix these things up, can't be that hard!

Synk Pro ReviewBuggy!! - Version: 6.0.3c, 3/9/2007 12:47AM PST

The application has a great potential, but has lots of bugs.

* The Italian localization is faulty, and you have to disable it, otherwise synk is unusable

* synk crashes randomly when filtering backup logs

* asks for fixing root privileges on every launch, no matter if you enter admin password upon request. I guess this happens when you move the application elsewhere on your hard drive after first configuration.

The developers seemed very responsive in the beginning, but after a couple of e-mails they decided to ignore my support requests.

The application seems very nice, but has lots of annoying bugs, and you can't rely on a lunatic support service.

Beware.

Synk Pro ReviewGreat App, Responsive Developer - Version: 6.0.2, 11/3/2006 01:07PM PST

I had some problems early-on (noted in comment below). I contacted the developer who worked with me to troubleshoot the issue. Ultimately it was an unusal situation in my system setup, and he was able to get to the root of it.

Now that the application is working correctly, it is such a pleasure to use. It is very simple to work with, very intuitive, and quite nicely thought out. I was able to get the application working without reading any manuals or instructions and it functions quite well.

Best backup application I have tried thus far.

In addition, it was a pleasure to have the developer so integral to my success. He was extremely responsive and helpful.

Synk Pro Troubleshooting ReportFalse Errors? - Version: 6.0.2, 10/28/2006 10:19AM PST

I am impressed by the interface simplicity and overall look of the program. However, upon execution, it found a number of errors with the backup, which translated to most of the files not being backed up. I ran the script 3 times and every backup found more errors, thus copying less files.

I got info on both the backup directory and the original directory and the file sizes and number of files were different.

Then I ran RsyncX on the same folder and did a "get info" directory compare and it came out perfect. Not sure what this means, but it is worth noting.

Because the interface is so nice, I really hope this company can make the application correctly back-up items soon. As I would love to give them my money for a backup solution.
