Product Description:

Asterisk is a complete PBX in software. It provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. Asterisk does voice over IP in three protocols, and can interoperate with almost all standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware.

Asterisk provides Voicemail services with Directory, Call Conferencing, Interactive Voice Response, Call Queuing. It has support for three-way calling, caller ID services, ADSI, SIP and H.323 (as both client and gateway).

Check the features section on the official Asterisk web site (http://www.asterisk.org) for a more complete list.

This version adds some custom modules by mezzoConsult (see http://mezzo.net/asterisk)
  • app_ldap - ldap support for dialplan.
  • app_notify - CallerID notification.
  • app_swift - support for Text-To-Speech Cepstral voices in the dialplan.
  • res_bonjour - configurable Bonjour support.

What's new in this version:

  • contains a fix for a security vulnerability recently found in the chan_skinny channel driver (for Cisco SCCP phones). This vulnerability would enable an attacker to remotely execute code as the system user running Asterisk (frequently 'root'). The exploit does not require that the skinny.conf contain any valid phone entries, only that chan_skinny is loaded and operational.
  • also contains a number of bug fixes, and some improvements to the chan_sip channel driver (for SIP devices) to mitigate the impacts of a certain class of denial-of-service attacks that have recently been published.
  • Universal Binary

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 or later (Universal Binary)

This download was clearly not tested properly before being unleashed into the world. Same goes for the previous (1.2..13) version, also available on the Mezzo website, so don't go wasting your time downloading that in the hope that the sloppiness is the exception.

There are several bits missing. The swift framework which is needed for app_notify is not included in the .dmg file, and the res_bonjour module is incomplete. The absence of these causes Asterisk to fail on startup. The quickest solution is to simply remove app_swift.so and res_bonjour.so from the /Library/Asterisk/modules directory, to stop Asterisk from trying to load them.

Once you do this, the package seems to run reasonably well, as far as I can tell.

I have heard a lot about this application and was happy to download it and give it a try. What happened,, 34Mb was installed in my Libraries and not any application was found any where. No documentation or nothing.

Going to "The developers site" directed me to a download page. No documentation or anything.

How do you expect that anybody could use this application???

Asterisk is really big time and not a tinker toy. Don't be misled by its status as open source; it is a VERY robust and complete product and as it continues to mature, it has the potential to bankrupt a lot of other players in the small to mid-size business market.

One university in Texas recently left a Cisco solution in favor of Asterisk - and we are talking an installation of 6000 phones.

This product needs more polish, more documentation, an improved user interface, but I expect these things to evolve in time.

I highly recommend that you investigate this product seriously.
