Perian ReviewPerian should just about be packaged with Quicktime its that necessary - Version: 1.1.4, 10/11/2009 11:06PM PST

tommmyboy_sf
I'm running it 1.1.4 on my G5 PPC and my Intel Macbook, both running 10.5.8, without any problems at all. I use video daily, editing it, watching it, and converting it, and have never had a problem with Perian. I couldn't do most of the things do very easily or quickly without Perian. I would say it primarily gets its biggest work out with the Nice Player, my preferred player because its slick and has a play list ;)

If you're running Snowleopard and experiencing issues, head over to the Perian forum http://forums.cocoaforge.com/viewforum.php?f=25 and see what people are talking about and what the discussion is... the developers and people who know their video stuff often contribute to the discussions so the forum is very valuable.

Perian Reviewplease update! - Version: 1.1.4, 9/17/2009 11:42PM PST

Fred_4
still doesn't work with Snow Leopard. The subtitles (srt files) feature is broken.
other than that, great application. can't see using quicktime without it.
if it wasn't for this one problem I would never use VLC

it's terrible, am getting crashed, and video corruptions and articfacts. not on all videos but some, and if there are multiple windows open, it's take down all of niceplayer.

can the developers please make 1.1.3 available online again so people can roll back.

cheers

Perian ReviewFantastic little "Must to have" extension - Version: 1.1.4, 7/29/2009 01:44AM PST

The idea is simple: "integrate" best of various worlds.

The implementation is fantastic and the usage is so easy that I consider Perian one of my preferred "transparent" OSX extension.

Great JOB

Perian CommentaryIs iChat AV conflict resolved? - Version: 1.1.4, 7/28/2009 11:29AM PST

FriscoFrog
Does Perian 1.1.4 resolve the conflict with iChat AV seen with ver 1.1.3 where you cannot see the person you are connected to during a video chat but they can see you? This did not occur with ver 1.1.2 which I reverted to. Both the Perian developers and Apple are finger pointing at each other as to who is to blame.

Perian ReviewVobSub (idx/sub) support greatly enhanced - Version: 1.1.4, 7/28/2009 01:49AM PST

Initial impression is that I'm delighted to find that VobSub subtitle support seems infinitely more stable in this release. Prior to 1.1.4 opening an avi w/VobSubs in my experience would crash QT on a fairly regular basis. By all appearances, this seems to work seamlessly now. My singular objection would be the somewhat garish blue/purplish shadow color I'm seeing.

Srt subs are the familiar clear and crisp white with a black shadow (pretty standard). Is there an issue matching this behavior with idx/sub?

Perian Troubleshooting Reportdoes not recognise mkv as video file - Version: 1.1.3, 4/2/2009 07:09PM PST

Shoey2817
This is the first version of Perian I have installed, when trying to open an mkv it does not recognise it as a video file.

the mkv trying to be played is as downloaded from Vuze/Azureus. The downloads included an .mkv and an mkv.asx file and .mkv.asx file has a quicktime icon but shows an error of Operation could not be completed. (OSStatus error -50.)

Can anyone help me with this?

This is one of the first apps I install on every Mac!
Definitly a must have for every videophile out there! :-)

The (new?) builtin autoupdate works great!

Perian Troubleshooting ReportiChat Problem - Version: 1.1.3, 2/3/2009 01:50PM PST

Perian Version 1.1.3 appears to be creating a problem with iChat. For confirmation, go to the Apple support pages (in particular Apple.com > Support > Discussions > iChat AV) and do a search on Perian. The problem is that the Mac computer with Perian Version 1.1.3 cannot see video from another computer during any iChat session.
The cure is to remove Perian Version 1.1.3 and install Perian 1.1.2 instead.

Perian Usage TipFCP compatibility warning - Version: 1.1.3, 1/7/2009 01:19PM PST

This plugin is great, but FCP users should be warned that this QT component seems to cause problems with transferring AVCHD files into FCP. I was having difficulty with stuttering video, then and I removed the Perian component, and I stopped having the problem.

I have no complaints otherwise, and this is certainly a minor or non-issue for most - I just wanted to warn others who may encounter the same issue.
