Product Description:

FileBrowse is a unique file/media browser for Mac OS X with many interesting features, such as:

  • Thumbnails for most common file types, such as images, movies, songs, PDF/RTF/Word documents, and even web pages. Even on Tiger. Finding a file by visual content has never been easier.
  • Beautiful 3D icons/thumbnails, rendered in real-time using OpenGL, with lifelike, soft shadows and perfect anti-aliasing (no jagged edges).
  • Folder icons that show miniature icons/thumbnails of the items inside, so you don't always have to open a folder to see its contents.
  • Large previews for most common file types, shown in-context (between the icons). This is much faster than having to open a file in a separate application.
  • Powerful grouping and sorting, by kind, date, color label, artist, album, camera, and many other attributes. Groups can be easily "collapsed"/stacked and in many cases can replace folders.
FileBrowse looks beautiful, is very easy to use and can seriously improve productivity. Version 1.0 costs just $25 and is available as a fully-functional 30-day trial download. It's a Universal (PowerPC/Intel) application.

What's new in this version:

  • Typing in the search box now instantly filters items, like in iTunes. No need to press Return/Enter. If you do press Return/Enter, all found items are selected and the search box is cleared (which shows the filtered-out items again). Of course you can also press the Escape key or push the small X button to clear the search box. In addition, a special (collapsed) group is shown with the filtered-out items, which can also be clicked to show those items again.
  • Multiple screens are now fully supported.
  • Window size and position are now remembered between sessions.
  • You can now click anywhere on a preview to zoom in/out. (A small change that makes a big difference.)
  • Clicking on the current folders name (between the path and the open folder icon in the upper-left corner of the page) now does the same as the New Identical Window command from the File menu. It clones the current window, complete with browsing history, the current selection, etc.
  • In Leopard, thumbnails and previews can now be generated for more file types (by using Quick Look thumbnail generation). If the Finder can show a thumbnail for a certain file, then so can FileBrowse. (Note that FileBrowse still uses its own thumbnail/preview generation code for most file types, because of better looking results.)
  • In Tiger as well as Leopard, selecting a web page (HTML, .webloc, .webarchive) now shows a (small) preview.
  • Dragging an item now shows its icon/thumbnail under the mouse pointer.
  • Favorites can now be removed from within FileBrowse. (Previously this had to be done in the Finder.)
  • Various other small changes and additions.
  • Improved speed. In particular: faster sorting and better multi-threaded thumbnail generation. The most recent (large) previews are now cached.
  • Bug fixes. This version is stable. An issue in Leopard where sometimes not all icons/thumbnails would be shown, is resolved. Previews of PDFs with pages that are not all the same size are now correctly handled. Et cetera.

FileBrowse CommentaryProblems with more than 1 monitor - Version: 1.0.2, 9/27/2006 01:39PM PST

Oddly, this program stops rendering if its window is placed on a secondary monitor. In fact, you can watch the thumbnails get "wiped away" when you drag the window from main to secondary.

Other than that, this looks pretty nice.
