Redline is a racing game for MacOS X that demonstrates just how much fun tossing polygons around at 200+ mph can be. With its advanced 3D rendering engine and a physics engine that ensures each car has a distinct feel, Redline also shows that running someone off of the road isn't just cathartic, it's downright fun.

Gun the throttle, light up the tires, and hurtle down the track in any of the three racing modes Redline offers: the realistic Simulation mode, an aggressive Arcade mode, or kick it into high gear in the insanely intense Turbo Arcade mode. No matter what your pleasure, take your pick from numerous cars, tracks, and jump into a racing game that delivers adrenaline via digital injection.

The real fun, though, is meeting nice people on the Internet and running them off of the road. Redline supports up to 12 people in a network race, either on a local network, or over the Internet. Meet up in the Lobby, pick a course, pick your cars, and recklessly slam your newfound "friends" into the guard rail in your quest for the coveted checkered flag.

Pure pleasure is in the control. Redline models each wheel of your car independently, as well as the axle width and weight of each car, allowing for an unprecedented feel of the road. Accelerate your way into a corner, tap the brakes, cut the wheel at just the right time, then punch the throttle and power-slide your way to the finish line. Boooooyah!

Redline features a dozen racing challenges such as acceleration, slalom, graduating you to real-world tracks with a variety of racing conditions. With each progressive challenge, your performance earns you new challenges, and new cars to drive. Your performance is also ranked among other Redline players from around the world via an Internet leader board.

What's new in this version:

  • Changed Analog Input center tolerance a bit more for low-precision gamepads.
  • Fixed a bug where stay-ready code doesn't sometimes unready when somebody just joined because it thinks the person who join was using an unsupported car (when the car name really just wasn't loaded over the network yet).
  • Better validation of built-in tracks and cars to cheating.
  • Crash recovery should work better (should fix "Tunnel of death" problem)
  • Shows car colors in Multiplayer Lobby for team games
  • Should select lower default refresh rates, so people don't run into the screen synch error.
  • Should detect *all* GeForce 5200's as having problem with anisotropic filtering.
  • Should fix random crashes in multiplayer lobby
  • Should fix physics slowing down when the network is too slow/bad to maintain a constant packet rate.
  • Should make refreshing of player and games list appear smoother.
  • Should fix the player list problem we had to server-side work around in 1.0.0
  • Should fix redline:// URLs
  • Increases the size of dead zones for controller axes, hoping to fix some of the controller issues reported.
  • Added some options for plugin cars
  • Allows players to disable the ghost car
  • Changed behavior of the "ready" selector, to stay ready until you manually unready (or some configuration comes up which you can't handle, because you don't have the plug-ins).
  • Fixed a display error in multiplayer games listing with people who have customized their names
  • Replays are now saved to the plug-in directory
  • In-game text should display smooth even when graphic settings are all minimized.

I have used redline on-and-off since not long after its release. Its a great racing game at a great price.
My only gripe is about the online multi-player environment. It is a great concept, but has an achilles heel. One of redlines strengths is the capacity to build and use custom tracks and custom cars. Unfortunately, in the multi-player section, it is one of redlines weaknesses. There are so many custom cars and custom tracks that trying to find someone running a race with tracks and cars that you have is almost impossible. You cant race on someone else's server unless you have all the cars running in the race and the track they have chosen. I think that this is one reason why the multi-player part of redline has been a bit of a ghost town over the last year, certainly compared to what it used to be.
A solution, at least for the missing cars, may be to somehow make the cars physics specs available to all players who dont have the cars plugin, which are then applied to some generic car included within redline. It mightnt look as pretty as the hotted up "real thing", but at least it might make the game accessible to those without the cars plugin. I know you can download most cars and tracks, but this can be annoying if you have to do it every time you want to race someone online. Another alternative may be to have some type of p2p software built-in to redline that enabled direct download of track and car plugins between player.
Anyway, just my two bobs worth.

I could not release some of the cars because I could not pass the slalem course. When I contacted Redline they asked me to email part of the game and unlocked it all for me, emailing it back. It was amazing what was now possible - including racing flying cars, big sports cars and even broken down pick-up trucks smashing into one another. One of the best game I have bought.

I just downloaded this game for the first time, and got it directly from the Ambrosia website. Thus I took is as a bad sign when it said I've had the game for 540 days when I launched it- at least it new that it was the first time I'd ran it. Has this game even been out for 540 days?

The first time, I could navigate the menus and such OK, but the first time I got into a game, the steering wouldn't work. I was using the correct buttons, and I could accelerate, brake, and shift, the steering just wouldn't do anything. I left and messed around with it and couldn't get it to work. I tried quitting and restarting, and the program crashed on launch. I tried restarting again, and it crashed again and this time brought down the whole system so I had to go to the hard power button.

So I deleted it. It was unusable.
