DiskLibrary CommentaryDeveloper note - Version: 1.9, 1/30/2009 12:38PM PST

Obvious Matter
This is a note from the developer of DiskLibrary. There have been some performance issues with searching within DiskLibrary (mainly on Mac OS X 10.4). This should have been resolved by version 1.9.

Version 1.9 also adds Quick Look support from within DiskLibrary for Mac OS X 10.5 clients.

Thanks,

Diederik Hoogenboom

DiskLibrary ReviewStill doesn't work. - Version: 1.8.1, 8/15/2008 06:44PM PST

I trie FLV, WMV, and SWF files and they all still failed.

I have Perian and QuickTime can play all of my files.
Maybe they need to write the program to use QuickTime?

It just doesn't work.

I liked this app, and chose it because of the interface and Mac "feel." I thought the $39 was steep, but figured it was probably worth it.

Big mistake. It is a sloth, both for importing CDs/DVDs AND searching.

Another negative... it choked when exporting catalogs, and I only had 15 CDs indexed.

Tried it on my both PPC and intel Macs running Leopard 10.5.2

DiskCatalogMaker RE that ships free with current version of Toast does a much better and faster job of indexing, and the search engine is far superior.

I am prompted to write this very accurate review, because the developer would not answer my emails requesting help.

DiskLibrary CommentaryThis is good & it's getting better. - Version: 1.5, 5/9/2007 07:46PM PST

I like the icons & meta data. It's the only one that does this. Think photography and lot's of CD/DVD's
- The image icons are now being deleted when a catalog is being deleted. But I do wonder about how full this directory may get with a large collection of CD/DVD's. Maybe creating sub-directories like iPhoto.
- Would like to see...
-- update catalog. If a disk has already been cataloged, and then files added/deleted. (Not all disks are read only)
-- ability to catalog just a subdirectory of a disk.
-----
Haven't purchased yet, but will be recommending to photography staff to give this a go.
As the title say's "This is good & it's getting better."

This really is the successor of tools like Disk Tracker and CD Finder. Same concept redone with more modern Cocoa tools. Really nice to have the option to create thumbnail's, although of course creating thumbs. slows down the cataloging significantly. Developer has been very quick to respond to feature requests. Great product.

How does this app stack up against DiskTracker? Does it import/read DT catalogues? Since I'm really fed up with the way DT never really gets updated I'm just curious how this thing performs. /tia

DiskLibrary Reviewnicest offline media cataloger yet - Version: 1.0, 11/27/2006 09:23PM PST

I've been beating up on this very nice app for the past couple months (during its beta period), and it's stood up remarkably well. While there is a bit of room for improvement, I think it's remarkably solid for a 1.0 release.

I use it to catalog my eMusic downloads that I've archived to CD, as well as all the random software and website downloads. Without a tool like this one, I'm reduced to shuffling discs all over the place to find "that one .mov file", or that eMusic album I downloaded last year but didn't fit on my iPod.

The developer is dedicated to making his users satisfied. Between that dedication and the already high quality of this program, I think it's a good value.

I like the look of it, but currently it's too slow in importing for me. I put a DVD in, dragged the icon onto the app and a dialog popped up listing all my drives (shouldn't it just start importing the disc?). I gave up after 5 minutes of it saying "importing" in the dialog box and clicked cancel. CDFinder has this disc imported in about 20 seconds. I will check in on later revisions.

Finally a nice catalog app. Hope the future interface looks more like iPhoto and iTunes.

Some hopes:

1. A smaller font size for catalog items (like iTunes)

2. A flat list with metadata and folder/catalog as a column. customizable columns for each smart catalog

3. combine metadata and item info (more useful for music files but maybe others too)

4. more metadata for music like bit rate, kind (aac, mp3, apple lossless), track number, disc number, genre, comment, …

5. option to show remote volumes above catalogs on left with quick button to import

6. a global catalog that shows all items from all catalogs

7. option-click smart catalog to edit (like in iTunes 7)

8. searching smart catalogs. a search now reverts back to searching the library

looks promising!!
