Product Description:

  • Supports more formats than I can remember. Zip, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, 7-Zip, Rar, LhA, StuffIt, several old Amiga file and disk archives, CAB, LZX, stuff I don't even know what it is.
  • Copies the Finder file-copying/moving/deleting interface for its interface.
  • Uses the character set autodetection code from Mozilla to auto-detect the encoding of the filenames in the archives.
  • Supports split archives for certain formats, like RAR.
  • Built around libxad (http://sourceforge.net/projects/libxad/). This is an old Amiga library for handling unpacking of archives. It supports a whole lot of formats, and I added a couple more, and bugfixed old code. I also wrote a higher-level Objective-C wrapper around it, which might be useful for other projects too (including Xee).

What's new in this version:

New in 2.5:

  • Fixes unpacking of password-protected Zip files, which was broken in the last update.
  • Source can now be built with a completely free implementation of RAR which works for all versions, including multimedia filters, avoiding the non-GPL-compatible unrar license. (There is also better support for ancient RAR 1.5 files.)
  • Has a workaround for a Paragon NTFS bug that made unpacking on NTFS drives generate errors.
  • Fixes for Tar and RPM files.
  • There are now two command-line utilities available, unar and lsar, which can be used to unpack and list archives, respectively. They are still in development and not really feature-complete, but they should work.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.5 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.5 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Yes. In common with other reports, Unarchiver has completely replaced all applications on my system which purportedly perform the same function. Not least the woeful Stuffit from Smith Micro.

No mess; no fuss; no invisible archived files or folders littering desktop like calcified leftovers.

haven't exactly used it extensively - in fact i've only unzipped one archive. but neither Archive Utility nor Stuffit Expander could do it, while The Unarchiver unzipped it just fine. this functionality should be the rule, not the exception. why don't *all* archive utilities just *work* like this?
