Product Description:

HyperDither is an OS X image processing utility that converts color or grayscale images to 1 bit black & white using a sophisticated dithering routine. Specifically, HyperDither implements the "Atkinson" dithering matrix.

Way back in the early days of Macintosh, Bill Atkinson (of QuickDraw, & MacPaint fame) developed a very elegant dithering matrix to convert greyscale image data to the 1-bit black & white Mac video display. The dithering produced by this routine was much higher quality than the now-a-days ubiquitous Floyd-Steinberg filter (used by QuickTime, PhotoShop). This algorithm has been unavailable for many, many years, until now!

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2
  • Mac OS X 10.1

Additional Requirements:

  • HyperDither was developed on Mac OS X 10.4.7 - earlier versions back to 10.1 should work
  • but have not been tested.

And what better you can say about a graphic software? As an Hypercard user I remembered this dithering vs. the PC squared-pattern, but always think Photoshop's was the same. Wrong. Pattern in PS has a smaller grain, but tends to "blur" and loss details. HyperDither gives a more contrasty but richer in midtones image. It's a beautiful tool for image workers. Thank you! (An idea coming off my mind is to convert this to a PS plugin, but this little thing is so quick that I don't know if it is really a good idea...)

I remembered this dithering, but I had forgotten how good it looked. Thank you for bringing it back to us.

The interface needs a little polishing (in export dialog the format menu and options button are too close and partly overlap).
