OmniPlan CommentaryNo network diagram view in previous versions... - Version: 1.6.2 beta 2, 4/3/2009 03:26AM PST

electric1--2008
The previous versions did not offer a network diagram view.

From their website there is no mention that a Network Diagram view is included in this version.

A Network Diagrams view is one of the most critical in project planning and execution.

Maybe in V2.0.

It Rocks. I use it and it is fantastic for what I do. I don't open evil MS files so can't say anything there. But it has done great for us!

Erleichtert mir meine Arbeit, da OmniPlan mich entlastet. Und keine Angst, dass plötzlich Daten verschwinden.

When opening a MS Project file it would take a long time to open, when modifying the data it would take about 5 seconds to display a keystroke. I contacted tech support and they said it does that when there are 40 items or more and we could break up the project which would not help.

OmniPlan Troubleshooting Report- Problems opening files - - Version: 1.1 beta 2, 3/2/2007 04:56PM PST

I've downloaded OmniPlan, Merlin and iTaskX, to try them out.

Only OmniPlan opened an old MS Project file I had - Merlin just seemed to hang at importing project and iTaskX couldn't open the project file.

Having said that, OmniPlan did give me errors when it tried to open the file. I emailed Omni and they emailed me back [within 10 mins !!] and suggested updating my Java.

I did that and OmniPlan then was able to open and manipulate the project file.

Out of the three, OmniPlan seems to be my only choice to work on MS Project files, from work.

YMMV

OmniPlan ReviewSimple project planning, great price - Version: 1.0, 2/27/2007 11:30AM PST

I am using OmniPlan for my PhD thesis research, which means I got it at the discounted academic rate. Nevertheless, the $149 price is reasonable considering the prices of the competition.

There aren't quite as many features to this program as other similar offerings, but from this limitation it gains a tremendous advantage for a large potential audience. Most organizations that could benefit from project management would find OmniPlan far simpler to use and easier to integrate with their routines than the often-impenetrable Microsoft Project (the only other such software with which I am familar).

For me, it worked very well, and within a few hours I was using its more advanced features to my benefit. Shallow learning curve and nicely-implemented features make this a truly good bargain for project management.

OmniPlan ReviewGreat Product Now. Shows a Lot of Promise for the Future - Version: 1.1 beta 1, 2/1/2007 03:07PM PST

Thucydides
The fact that the OmniGroup has thrown its hat into the project management ring means that Mac OS X will eventually end up with the finest project management software on any platform (won't it be nice to have a reasonable alternative to the buggy, but irreplaceable MS Project?)

It's true that there are currently project management software packages that do more, but I used those in their 1.0 version and they did less than OmniPlan. OmniPlan actually looks and behaves like a very nicely done OS X application. Plus, OmniGroup is committed to making best-of-class software applications. You'd have to have your head buried in the sand not to notice the thoroughness of their approach with OmniGraffle, OmniOutliner, and OmniWeb.

This is a beta of the second release, so if you can't handle some instability, then stick with the 1.0 version and wait until 1.1 final.
