Canon CanoScan Toolbox CommentaryBroken, old version working ok - Version: 4.9.3.4X, 3/13/2008 12:13AM PST

My experience was somewhat the opposite of what was expected. I installed the old versions of the driver and software off the CD today with new Canoscan LiDE 25. Worked ok.

Downloaded and installed latest driver and software off Canon web site. Scanner stopped working.

Uninstalled new driver, reinstalled old driver. Working again.

Mac OS X 10.5.2. Intel iMac,

Your milage may vary!

My driver won't open from my desktop control panel, but WILL open if I push one of the buttons on the front of the scanner.

There is a solution! I thought I would have to trash my LiDE 500f scanner, but I followed the instructions at Canon to a "T" and it worked out. If you already have the latest CanoScan software and drivers, then simply search for the old ScanGear folder and trash it-- this may solve your problem. If not, go to Canon USA's website <http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=DownloadIndexAct> identify your scanner, click on the Download & Drivers tab, select your OS, then download BOTH the latest drivers and the latest CanoScan software (possibly 4.9.3). Download both and install. BE SURE TO TRASH YOUR OLD SCANGEAR FOLDER before you install them. This worked for me without any hitches.

Canon CanoScan Toolbox ReviewLIDE 60 doesn't work with Leopard - Version: 4.9.3.4X, 1/17/2008 12:00AM PST

After over two hours on the phone with Canon paid ($9.99) support, I still cannot get my Canon LIDE 60 scanner to work. Tried everything including removing EVERYTHING Canon from the system and installing anew.

Canon blames Apple, Apple says that is the scanner shows up in the System Profiler (it does), then Apple's part is done. So, Apple blames Canon for lousy drivers that don't work. I'm on Apple's side, Canon support and software simply sucks.

If you are using Leopard, buy an HP or some other brand of scanner and stick it good to Canon, a most decidedly bad company when it comes to Mac support.

BTW, I have a PPC Powerbook G4 and the problem may be specific to PPC models. I've heard from reading other forums that the new software might work on Intel Macs. But it sure doesn't on PPC Macs.

I tried this update with the LiDE 35 and it does not work. However, the older version (CanoScan Toolbox 4.5) continues to work with Leopard once the new ScanGear drivers are loaded. These drivers are available on canon.com.

Having had nothing but problems using a LIDE70 with an Intel Mac Mini, and having made sure that I had the latest drivers from the Canon UK website, I contacted Canon tech support. They were totally useless and told me that the problem must lie with MacOSX, and not with their drivers or the scanner. However at the Canon USA website there are later drivers which are specifically labelled as suitable for Intel Macs.

Go to: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=351&modelid=14003

and you can get Driver v12.12.0 and Toolbox v5.0.1.1. I still don't know which parts of the software are in each file, so I will be installing both. The key question is which one contains the TWAIN plugin, but that is not specified anywhere. You obviously need the drivers, but the Toolbox may just contain the crappy "console" application.

Canon CanoScan Toolbox Usage TipLiDE 35 with Intel iMac: Happy Discovery! - Version: 4.9.3.3, 7/3/2007 04:42AM PST

This isn't strictly relevant to the LiDE 25, but an advanced search of VT returns no updates for the LiDE 35, and entering "Canon" brings up a messy heap of confusing updates, so here seems as good as a place as any, and the "discovery" may be useful to other Canon scanner users...

As a UK user, I've been deeply disappointed to have a barely functional LiDE 35 hooked up to my Intel iMac, especially as Canon UK site's most recent drivers date from 2003. On a whim, I checked the Canon US site, and found a suite of updated, Intel-friendly software from June 2007. This installed with no problems, and even caused the one-touch buttons to work again, which I certainly didn't expect.

I encountered a similar situation with a Samsung printer a few years ago too, so it might pay to keep an internationalist outlook when looking for new drivers...

Same as below. I have version 4.1.1.0. Works great on iBook G4 ,OS10.4.10 with LIDE 30. This download can't find driver. It didn't integrate with the older version. It downloaded as a separate ap. There is no further info re: Plug-Ins as in 4.1.1.0 with ScanGear CS 7.0 OX. There is no indication of a user manual although it has a couple of different settings. Don't know if ScanGear will work or if it's necessary. I guess I'll keep it in my apps. till there are more answers.

Canon CanoScan Toolbox CommentaryAnybody with LIDE 25 and Intel Macs? - Version: 4.9.3.3, 6/30/2007 09:11AM PST

Great to have the CanoScan application Intel-native. But unfortunately, it reports a "can't find driver" error when I try to use it with my Intel iMac and my LIDE 30.

Anybody have luck?

Although this post says the update is for the LIDE 25, the Canon site also lists this update for the LIDE 500F. I'd guess it is appropriate for a number of Canon scanners.
