We bought this for DVD Player. It worked under Leopard but does not under Snow Leopard, for which I have rated it.
Finally working under Leopard - Version: 1.3.2, 10/7/2008 06:32AM PST

Took a while, but it's finally working under Leopard without the double-action bug.
So, if you need a utility to use the Apple Remote for more than the built-in functions, go for it.

Really, really outstanding

I haven't been as pleased with a piece of software in a long time. This tool did everything I wanted it to to let me control everything with my Apple remote. The only gripe I have is, the IR sensor on the Belkin keyboard isn't supported, so I can't use it with my first gen Mini -- if support for this could be added at all that would be great.

This update has caused my Keyspan IR receiver to stop working? If I uninstall Mira and re-install the earlier 1.2.1 my Keyspan remains broken...
Quite stange

Only need this for VLC, it will launch VLC but no other function works - ie the play, forward and back simply do nothing, I have reapplied all actions but no change.

I've tried all three of the programs (mira, Sofa Control and Remote Buddy) and definitely prefer mira to the others. As paul mentioned in his review, you can tell that there was a lot of thought put into the way mira was designed. Remote Buddy offers some additional functionality missing in mira, but it feels a lot "clunkier" and harder to use.
I would also love to see some way of bringing up a help window when in an application so it would show you how the buttons are mapped for that particular app. Overall, I'm very pleased with this product. It worked without any issues out of the box, and the built-in help is top notch. I think with the addition of a few missing features, this will stand head and shoulders above the others.
I also wanted to comment on their customer support. I had some questions about invoking apple scripts from buttons, and I got a pretty detailed response back from the developer in about 5 minutes! Now that's great customer service!

I have extensively used mira, Sofa Control, Remote Buddy and I must say that mira is one of the most intelligently crafted of them all.
I like mira the most over the others because:
1) Simple and Elegant design. Everything from novice users to power users will love how easy to use this application is.
2) Power and Flexibility. mira has just the right blend of features that gives you almost all the functionality anyone could want.
Here's what I DO NOT like OR wish to have in mira:
1) mira is automatically disabled when the mira preference pane is open, which makes it difficult for testing your remote. You have to close and re-open as your testing. But not too bad, once everything is configured the way you want.
2) Both Remote Buddy and Sofa Control have built-in file browsers for navigating your home directory and opening files/documents along with file info and previewing.
3) Remote Buddy has a great feature that I would like to see in mira. When your controlling an application with your remote, you can pull up a menu reminding your what each button on the remote does for the current application. This is helpful because every application behaves differently and this way you won't have remember what the buttons do while your in a certain application. This would be an awesome addition to mira's feature set.
4) I would like to be able to create my own customized multi-fuction buttons, in addition to the pre-determined ones already built-into mira.
Other than that I would recommend all these wonderful apps: Sofa Control, Remote Buddy and mira. But... I would HIGHLY recommend mira and prefer it over the others (for now at least).
mira is my choice!

The Previous was retracted by the poster - Version: 1.1, 7/24/2006 04:02PM PST

The poster of the previous negative review retracted his comments in a reply. It turns out there was some "other" software installed before mira that was mishandling the Apple Remote.
mira is a standard Preference Pane and is not deeply rooted or installed. It sits plainly in your /Library/PreferencePanes folder and is accessed like all other Preference Panes through System Preferences.
mira also features a helper called miraRCD (the same way the remote does by default) - this helper is full contained in the pref pane and it runs each time you log into your computer.
mira also features a handy State Menu that can be used to temporarily disable its features at any time as well as uininstall it completely from your system (right from within its own UI!). That's right, no uninstall programs to lose or cluttering your hard drive.

i am looking into all apps for the apple remote atm. this is the only one that gave me massive trouble. nests itself deeply into the system, renders my remote unusable and does not do anything except no matter what button i press. i also don't get the configuration dialog and also can't see what i could be doing wrong. it is supposed to work out of the box, right?
anyway, i have had enough of this. three stars for the documentation on how to uninstall this stuff. best part of it.
i am back to trying out sofa controll and remote buddy.
