Product Description:

Cuckoo brings clock chimes back to the Mac. Play a beep on the hour---or on the half-hour, or every five minutes if you must. You can use one of Cuckoo's tasteful built-in tones, or any of your Mac's installed sounds. Cuckoo has its own volume control, so your chimes can be a subtle part of your work environment. And Cuckoo will go silent altogether if you want (for example, while iTunes is playing music or videos, or when the screen saver is active).

What's new in this version:

Release notes for Cuckoo version 1.2.1:

  • Feature: New "Website" and "Feedback" buttons in the preference pane provide quick access to the toastycode website as well as email support.
  • Fix: Concurrency bug causing occasional crashes of the chime agent (performing software updates on multiprocessor systems).
  • Fix: Cosmetic: Corrected prefPane icon (which wasn't showing up in System Preferences for some users) and CuckooChimeAgent icon (wrong icon was included in bundle).
  • Fix: Improvements software update checking. (Reduced the likelihood of superfluous second check; update information was being accidentally clobbered by preference pane. Also improved the accuracy of anonymous system profile summary sent with each check.)

It does exactly what you'd expect, has a nice and simple preferences interface, and it's tiny. A welcome desktop companion.

I had separate chimes for each quarter hour with OS 9 too. I even downloaded a proper clock sound and had that chime as many times as the hour was. But OS X has the ability to tell me what the time is every quarter hour. You soon learn to ignore a mere computer sound--though it's harder to ignore one that repeats--but it's not so easy to miss a voice telling you what the time is! I think I'll stick to the voice.

This is a great little pref pane. To the author: please, if you can, make it so one may assign DIFFERENT sounds for each time period.
