LCD remains lit after upgrading to Leopard... - Version: 1.3.3, 4/23/2009 12:19AM PST
There is no god
I have been using insomnia for a while under Tiger and found it useful. After upgrading to Leopard, however, I noticed that when I close the lid on my macbook (with insomnia enabled) the lcd remains on. I would like to find a solution to this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

CHANGE THE ICONS - Version: 1.3.3, 1/10/2009 11:19PM PST

If you find the icons in the top bar horrible, just like me, its easy to change. U just have to close the app, than open the get info menu for the app, than remove the .app extension. The app will become a folder. Than open it and search for the files loaded and unloaded .png. Now replace them for new icons that u have choosen. I reccomend the icons from the similar program Caffeine. For having them u have to download it and do the same til you find its icons inside the app folder. They are pretty cool. Just remember to change the name of the new icons to loaded and unloaded, otherwise the app (insomnia) wont find the files. Than put back the .app extension in the folder name. It should become an app again, and once you launch it, the new icons should appear the bar. It worked pretty good to me! Good Luck!!
Alternative way to work with a closed lid using external monitor and keyboard - Version: 1.3.3, 8/21/2008 03:46AM PST

I have an Intel-based Macbook with Mac OS X 10.5.4. I mostly work on the macbook at the office with an external monitor, keyboard and mouse. I was looking for the solution to keep the lid closed while working with an external monitor. It turns out that you really don't need an additional software in this case. When you close the lid the computer goes into sleep mode. Then you press any key on external keyboard and it wakes up without switching on macbook monitor. Now you can work on external monitor with macbook lid closed and macbook display turned off. You can open the lid but macbook display will be still asleep. If you really need to turn the macbook display on - just click "detect displays" in the external monitor menu on the status bar (you will find this option if you have checked "show display in the menu bar" option in Displays preferences). After you have both displays working, if you want to use sleep mode again - just close the lid - both monitors and computer will go into sleep mode again.

Works like a charm on my MPB 3.1 with OS x 10.5.2 - Version: 1.3.3, 5/6/2008 03:02AM PST

One suggestion: add another menu item like "hibernate now", so you can choose to send the system to normal sleep or to safe/deep sleep.
Thanks for this app.
Thanks for this app.
Insomnia ver 1.3.3 is now current - Version: 1.3.2, 3/9/2008 06:24PM PST

As of 2008-03-09, versiontracker was still showing Insomnia ver 1.3.2 as current with a download link for same. Actually ver 1.3.3 is current, be sure you download this from the website or thru the check for updates feature. Ver 1.3.3 works with OSX 10.5.2 on my macbook pro.
Regarding overheating with the lid closed, according to apple tech support, macbooks and macbook pro's have thermal protection. But it's a sensible idea to turn off the built-in screen before running with the lid closed, obviously.
If you use Insomnia, please consider making a reasonable donation. Development of utilities like this should be encouraged -- and rewarded.

Remember, intel apple laptops can be used with the lid shut without any extra software. Just plug in a USB device and it wakes up.

1. Run InsomniaX to stop macbook going to sleep when lid closed and no external display detected (e.g. when connected to a projector via HDMI, but the projector is OFF)
But ONLY supress "sleep mode" when the lid is first closed
2. Allow me to put the macbook to sleep via another Wake On Lan featured application (e.g. remoteTap on ipod touch)
3. Allow me to wake up the mac via RemoteTap/WakeOnLAN but stop the sleep from kicking in immediately it detects the lid is still closed...
Basically disable sleep only at the very instant the lid is actually closed and not permenantly disable sleep thereafter
