Product Description:

iPiece will show a magnifier window right next to your cursor. Whenever you want to see things closer, press its hot key, or double-click the eyeglasses icon in the menu bar and iPiece's magnifier will appear. When you are done with the magnifier, double-click the icon again and it will disappear until you want it back.

iPiece improves on Mac OS X's zoom capability by letting you see all of your work while viewing the part you're most interested in up close. It also works more naturally across multiple monitors and lets you set specific known zoom levels. It also alleviates the need to zoom back out when you're done magnifying and doesn't get in your way by taking up a permanent part of your screen like some other screen magnifiers.

What's new in this version:

  • Added an option (off by default) to gray out the screen around the magnified area to make the area being magnified more visible.
  • added an option to show a thicker crosshair
  • You can now choose the accent color of iPiece from a list of 6 colors.
  • The crosshairs colors will now invert if you choose to invert the magnifier
  • rearranged preferences UI
  • iPiece now sets itself to start up at login the first time it's launched. This of course can be turned off.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

Additional Requirements:

  • iPiece requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later to run.
  • It should work on any Macintosh that will support Mac OS X 10.4; however, iPiece makes use of OpenGL, so a Macintosh with a graphics card capable of supporting Quartz Extreme will be able to use iPiece much more effectively.
  • Universal Binary.

iPiece ReviewA couple more features and it will be just what I am looking for - Version: 1.2, 4/9/2008 06:14AM PST

Great product does what it says, just not quite the way I'd like it to. I'm totally going to recommend it to my Mother who has trouble with small stuff on her screen sometimes.

But what I really want is the ability to turn off the offset. And also it would be great if the magnifies section did not get shy near the edge of my screens. I know it took extra effort to code that, but I would prefer to have the option of having the magnified section was always centered on my cursor position (I would leave it on this feature always).

I like the crosshairs, but would prefer a smaller one without a circle. And what would be really great (and possibly quite difficult to do) is a 50% transparent version of the cursor inside the box overlaid on the the magnified image where it would appear if the image contained the cursor. This one I can do without, but it would be a nice cherry on top.

Also I would like not to have the missing corner on the mag box. If I had control over the boder style I would choose a single line instead of a double line, I think it looks cleaner, and Apple threw those double lines out with Mac OS 9.

overall a cool product, which I recommend and will happily use and pay for with a couple of the above features included.

iPiece CommentaryNot the same as the built-in zoom feature - Version: 1.2, 4/9/2008 05:50AM PST

This thing does something entirely different to the keyboard zoom feature (which I use a LOT, by the way) zooming the whole screen is cool sometimes, but having a little magnifying glass for zooming some of the screen is great other times. That's why this product exists, and also why I searched for it. I wonder what the previous commentator was looking for...
