Product Description:
Springy is a simple to use, yet powerful archiving and compression utility for Mac OS X. Springy integrates seamlessly with the Finder and includes some very useful features. All archiving tasks can be done via Drag and Drop or through Springy's Finder contextual menu.
Springy features at a glance:
- Open and browse the contents of an archive or disk image without extracting any file from it.
- Quickly extract all files or only files of choice from an archive or disk image.
- Modify the contents of an existing archive or disk image: add, overwrite, delete and rename files.
- Full Drag & Drop support for archiving and extracting from and into Finder.
- Edit and modify any file in an archive or disk image by double click.
- Archiving and extracting tasks may be accomplished quickly and efficiently using Finder contextual menu.
- Browsing files in archives and disk images and extracting particular file or folder using hierarchical Finder contextual menu.
Springy supports the following file types: ZIP, TAR, PAX, CPIO, CPGZ, DMG, ISO, GZIP, BZIP2, Unix Compress, RAR, SIT, JAR, WAR, EAR... Support for more types is planned for future releases.
What's new in this version:
- Fixed broken compression (without archiving) in version 1.4.
- Support for PAX and CPIO archives (both compressed and uncompressed).
- BZIP2 compression of files in ZIP archives. Storing files in ZIP archive, without compression, is now also possible.
- Editing and modifying files in archives and disk images directly, without previous extraction.
- Showing file packages contents or hiding the contents and treat packages as single files.
- Much better error handling and reporting.
- Fixed minor bugs and unusual behaviour from previous versions.
- Better optimization, especially when it comes to memory usage, disk activity and the way file icons are rendered.
- Some other GUI and usability improvements and changes.

THe guy who is running around claiming false advertising is, I was going to say an idiot, but he's probably smart enough. He made assumptions and then expected the developer to some how "make it happen". He also didn't hear a word of the very patient explanations. His chief complaint is that split archives are not supported by other Mac applications, even though it is a standard format. Which is like saying Microsoft WORD is not a Mac word processor because not every word processor on the Mac can open .doc files.
I have been testing Spriny today and it does everything it says it does and does it quite well. I have a small collection of archiving tools right now and I plan to dump the rest of them and just use Springy. It's fast and has some features that are not available on any other archiving utility on the Mac. Ironically that was basically the malcontents problem, that the developer had the nerve to do some things that nobody else on the Mac was doing yet! How dare he!!!

I use this software since about 1,5 years and at the latest with this release I also decided to kill every Stuffit application on my Mac. Springy is always the right tool for archiving and compressing.
The contextual menu is nice and user-friendly for every day use and give you perfect options right at your side:
- Option to preserve Macintosh contents
- Password and compression level on the fly
- etc.
Over the years I tried many other solutions, but nothing can beat Springy for my opinion.

I then tried to create a .dmg image from a folder that contained two related files totaling a bit over 4mb. After going through the necessary options it finally began processing it. This took a couple of minutes. I haven't used any other image creators so I don't know if this is average, slow or fast. To me, though, it is incredibly slow and not the sort of tool I could use to compress and create disk images of large folders of files.
I'm sure that this is covered somewhere in the help or FAQs but at this point I'm not going to look for it: When double-clicking on other .zip or .dmg files I get asked so many questions rather than simply opening and mounting the image as the Finder does or extracting the contents of the zip image as the Finder does. Perhaps these extra steps are a blessing to some users but for me, they're just impediments to a smooth work flow.
