How Microsoft
as someone elsewhere noted discussing ripping:

"FAIRMOUNT is a great tool when used with VLC;
For some reason it come packed with some piece of junk DVD ripper-just download and toss that part-and pair up Fairmount with VLC for a cracking good time...."

FairMount Usage TipFairmount 1.0.4 is included... - Version: 1.0.4, 4/22/2009 03:05PM PST

Fairmount 1.0.4 is included in the DVDRemaster 5.1.2 dmg. So only one download is required to get both.

Every link to FairMount, whether on Versiontracker or at the developer's site downloads DVDRemaster, not a free decryption program.

Is there another link?

Seems perfect -- it does one thing and does it very well. I don't need a lot of extra features, just access to the cleartext of the DVD. I also appreciate that it uses VLC for the real work, since VLC seems to be very actively maintained unlike other DVD rippers that have fallen by the wayside (cough MTR cough).

FairMount ReviewWorked Great! - Version: 1.0.2, 11/17/2008 02:11PM PST

Mr. Frugal
Finally! An alternative to Mac the Ripper! I was getting tired of trying to track down the elusive and cryptic MTR updates.
I had no problem with excessive copying times with Fairmount. It took about 25 minutes to do a DVD (I did disc 1, part 1 Lord of the Rings so I could do a switching comparison between my old DVD player and a 1080p up conversion player.)
Perhaps the people who have had difficulties were using an older version of VLC Player. VLC Player is a crucial part of this app, so make sure you are up to date on it.
My next test for it will be to see how it handles those pesky Disney DVD's. Disney must have a huge squad of developers writing encryption code!

I highly recommend Fairmount!

FairMount Reviewmarvelous - Version: 1.0.2, 4/20/2008 10:02AM PST

it's marvelous! i have no idea why there are feedback that it's not working for them.

i mounted a css encrypted disc in less than 3 mins, original disc capacity showed 7.45gb, it's quite a recent movie release. i am also able to mount similiar dvds, especially those rented ones, on my mac to watch to view and do conversion or anything, which i previously can't. no bogus speed numbers, i did this on a 2.33 intel core dual 2 macbookpro.

it does what it says. it's free. it worked superb for me. this freeware coupled with handbrake another freeware, makes a great combination for ripping dvds (especially encrypted ones) to my portable device.

marvelous, marvelous. bravo. thank you.

FairMount ReviewDoes this actually work??? - Version: 1.0.2, 4/10/2008 08:47AM PST

I have tried 3 of my DVD's with no success. I mean I started in the morning and gave up when I went to bed. Are you kidding me? I mean if it can't mount/decrypt a disk in 16 hours then it belongs in only one place, the trash can. Can anyone provide real-world success?

My mac is no slouch either. Mac Pro Quad-3GHz 8GB ram.

MTR 3 r14m is still my best friend taking usually about 20-25 minutes.

FairMount CommentarySlow! - Version: 1.0.2, 4/5/2008 01:04AM PST

This program moves at a snails pace. I'd like to see someones report on how long it actually took them to copy or do ANYTHING with their mounted disk image.

I couldn't get it to recognize any DVD's no matter what I did. I followed the manual to the end and nothing. VLC plays the DVD's without a hitch, MTR identifies them as well, but this program just sat there. Couldn't drag and drop as it would accept nothing. MTR is still the best.

FairMount ReviewA really underated app/utility - Version: 1.0.2, 2/18/2008 12:00AM PST

First the backdrop. I've been using MTR for a number of years and have previously donated for version 3x. Now it is so difficult to purchase the app. it's just not worth the effort. For further details see my original post on this matter.

Now for the alternative. I have an extensive dvd library of several hundred purchased discs and I prefer to use copies of the originals. Now I've only tried this on ten dvds thus far but the results have been satisfactory. The app. (which has been mentioned by others) is Fairmount.

I've used Fairmount on discs from Britain, America and India. I also used Toast 7.1.3 and DVD2oneX (latest version) and it just worked.

The other good thing about Fairmount is that it costs nothing, nil and zip. There are no hoops to go through. No nasty people to deal with; it just works.

So there you have it, Fairmount is THE alternative to Mactheripper. I'll repeat this post under the Fairmount section of versiontracker. If anyone wants an explanation on how the app. works just give a reply to this post. Once you use it once it's very straightforward.

One other point needs to made, other than Fairmount there are no decent dvd rippers for the mac. Fast DVD Copy is only fair and DVD Copy is so slow I can see my life passing by. Also the results are on par with FastDVD. Just OK, but too many errors

P.S. Regarding Toast do not upgrade to Toast 8 just stick with version 7.1.3. Version 8x is as buggy as all get out.

P.P.S. Fairmount will only work with Tiger and beyond. Panther is not supported. It also links up to VLC so make sure you have a copy of that app. as well.
