jreffnerThey've always been very helpful and quick to fix any bugs tha we've found. I mean this in a very literal sense. There as always been an update anywhere between 1 to 4 days after reporting the bug.
Besides all of that I mainly use it for PAL to NTSC conversion. It works very well for this. It allows me to built simple menus too. It's really a great app.
No support. Product doesn't work reliably. No docs.

jreffnerThis app has two really great uses (in my opinion). First it will let you easily rip episodes from a DVD and easily compile your own DVD of your favorite episodes (ripper not neeeded). Most importantly it allows you to convert those episodes/chapters to and from NTSC/PAL. This is great as I have a few PAL discs I've wanted to convert to NTSC. This is the ONLY app I've found that makes this easy. It doesn't do a 1 to 1 conversion, but it will convert the data on the disc and then allow you to build a simple menu using any background picture you want, or by taking any frame from the movie you want.
The interface is a bit confusing at first, but after watching the tutorial movies at their website, it bacame very easy. The interface is very iTunes like, but I think it was confusing because none of the rippers, recompressors, burners I've used use an interface like it. Again, once you get it, it's very easy. Watch the movies...
I really am looking forward to what is coming with this application. The price is also more than fair when you start thinking about what all this can do. The demo is a bit limited, butHawkeye really is a top notch program. I'd suggest you try it.

Give it a try if you like - Version: 1.0.1, 6/25/2006 04:02PM PST

TGSanteeHawkeye requires the existing video to be DVD-compliant MPEG 2 so this isn't for encoding MPEG2 from other kinds of video files. It can requantize video so you can fit more to a disc (such as using DVD2OneX or Popcorn). It also can burn discs or create disc images for burning with Toast or Disk Utility. When I selected one of Hawkeye's disc images (that contained some chapters from a commercial DVD) in Toast's Copy window, a message appeared reporting that the video was copy protected. But then Toast went ahead and mounted and burned the disc image without problem. So I don't know what is up with that.
Except for the commercial disc ripping and the different way it lets you create menus I'm not certain why someone would choose to use Hawkeye instead Toast 7. But it's easy to download and give it a try. The Help menu could be a better tutorial than it is so you'll spend some time trying to figure out how it all comes together.
If you do choose to save a disc image be sure to create an empty folder for it in the Save dialog box. Otherwise it will place everything on the hard drive at the same level where you are saving the disc image (the default was the Documents folder) inside the disc image file. That was a shock to see my entire Documents folder copied inside the disc image! I don't know if this is fixed in version 1.0.2.
