VisualHub CommentaryVisualhub development continues - Version: 1.34, 11/13/2009 11:12AM PST

Andrew D
The developer released the source code on retirement -> FilmRedux
Google for example "VisualHub Lives: Squeezing Movies Down To Size"
Sadly it does not appear to work for me, and the error msg is unreadable.

Unfortunately Techspansion closed its doors this week and will not continue development of VisualHub. The product is no longer available for download from the TechSpansion website, but , but can be found at various archives around the net if you do a web search.

I wish the programmer of this fantastic software the best for the future. Every day he makes my life just a bit easier with this great application's ease in converting files that would otherwise be very tedious.

VisualHub ReviewDisappointed - Version: 1.34, 7/24/2008 12:20PM PST

Out of about 15 files, this software failed to process any of them. It either errored out with various error messages or, on the few occasions that it did process the file, the audio was out of sync. This was mostly with h264 .ts files and h264 .mkv files. For me, a waste of money.

VisualHub CommentarySubtitle support - Version: 1.34, 7/10/2008 11:47PM PST

Great app but I wish I could rip my DVDs with subtitles using Visualhub, but it has no support for subtitles. Please add this in the next update. I know that Handbrake has this support but it doesn't work on all DVDs.

VisualHub ReviewDoes what it says on the tin - Version: 1.34, 7/9/2008 01:31AM PST

All I wanted to do was to take my AVI movie files and my SRT subtitle files, and burn them into a DVD format that my DVD player (Sony home theater) can play. Simple.

I tried iDVD, then ffmpeg itself, then spent money on Roxio Toast (which is more eye candy than anything else), and so on. If they "worked" in the first place, they ended up recording the movie in a format that was unwatchable on the DVD player. Either a stupid aspect ration, despite specifying a widescreen format before the burn process, or some just wouldn't play.

Then I tried a combination of Submerge and Visual Hub. End of woes.

This is a small, but extremely useful application. It works. It just works. Which is how applications should be.

VisualHub CommentaryGood but need extras features - Version: 1.33a, 6/13/2008 07:11AM PST

VH is an excellent software to convert any videos files.
I wish I could choose which portion of a video I want to convert, from 2.31mn to 4.55mn for example.
It should be a nice feature for a future release.
Please, do it.

VisualHub ReviewTad Unreliable - Version: 1.33a, 6/7/2008 05:47PM PST

It worked fine for me on one file jobs. Stitching and converting as it should. However when I tried to convert 10 or so files from AVI to MP4 it locked my machine solid on numerous occasions. Had to use toast instead. Which is not as fast but just keeps going.

VisualHub ReviewNot as good as it claims to be - Version: 1.33a, 5/30/2008 04:57PM PST

I used Handbrake to produce an .avi file from a DVD movie. Like all the avi files I have, the damned thing won't play in Quicktime, I must use VLC Player to watch the movie on my computer. Well, I'm not even half-way happy with this arrangement because VLC has (at least) one damned annoying bug — you can't blithely click ahead and have the movie seamlessly re-start at that new point. More often than not, VLC starts sulking and quits.

To add insult to injury, one movie reaches a point very near the end and chokes on something. VLC quits. A re-start brings up that old bug that stops me moving forward to near that point in order to check if it was a one-off or what.

To hell with it, I thought, I'll try a different tool. Enter VisualHub. I launched it, pointed it towards the avi movie and asked it to make an mp4 version. I tried several variants.

In every case: (a) I could not convince VisualHub to present the movie on my computer unsqueezed horizontally. (Yes, I read the manual. There is passing reference to an anamorphic setting but no way to use it to give what I want.) (b) Way more annoying, VisualHub used only the first few chapters of the movie to make a new file. Yes the output plays in Quicktime but only half-way through the damned movie! Totally useless.

For all its simplicity, Handbrake has a much-richer feature set. My only quibble is that the output won't play in Quicktime and I'll wager if I fool around long enough, I'll solve that one.

Goddamn. Audio, pictures and so on are so simple on a computer. Why is video so damned confusing? All I want is to copy from a DVD and make the output playable on my computer using Quicktime and in a DVD player. Seems impossible.

And don't even mention MacTheRipper. For my money, way less useful than Handbrake.

Sigh Guess someone will write something some time fully-featured that works seamlessly, bug-free, usefully. On that day, I'll happily shell out something like $100 for it.

This app is fantastic, I've used it only a short while but it's super easy to use but very versatile and advanced when needed. Great design.

VisualHub ReviewGreat program if only... - Version: 1.33a, 5/14/2008 01:21PM PST

This would be a great program if it only converted subtitles properly (such as handbrake, which BTW is the only app that can.) We have asked the developer for this inclusion many times...
