Product Description:

CD Stack allows you to rip your CDs with control that you may not be used to on a Mac. It is designed with many shortcuts in mind for when you have a large amount of discs to rip. You add cover art when you rip, control with finer detail how you want your MP3s encoded, and use the best encoder out there, the L.A.M.E. encoding engine.
Rip...Rip...Rip...
When you rip with CD Stack, the CD-ROM drive will rip as fast as it can, and MP3 encoding happens as fast as it can. The encoding speed, however, will not affect how fast you can get through your discs. If you have a fast or upgraded CD/DVD-ROM drive, you will be able to rip your CDs a lot faster, leaving the computer to finish encoding your MP3s as fast as it can. This means less time babysitting the computer while it simultaneously rips and encodes.
Integrates with iTunes. Or Not.
CD Stack will automatically import songs that you ripped into iTunes, complete with artist and track information and cover art. You also have the option of not importing into iTunes, if you would rather use a different program to play back your MP3s. CD Stack allows you to organize the MP3 files by different criteria so that you can organize your files out exactly as you like.
L.A.M.E. MP3 Compression.
It's definitely NOT lame... But it is, (in our opinion) the best MP3 encoder out there. Your files will sound better, and you will have more control over bitrate and quality than you would with other software. Also, unlike other software that uses L.A.M.E. for the Mac, CD Stack does not require you to use iTunes. It completely stands alone.

What's new in this version:

1.0.2 - Major bugfix and enhancement release ( 6/1/2006)

Bugfixes:
 • Fixed a bunch of bugs surrounding setting your own LAME switches.
 • Fixed a bug where if you didn't save your settings, it would use what was modified for that CD Stack session.
 • Changed LAME VBR algorithm slider to not allow going greater than 5. Greater than 5 is not recommended by the LAME people, and 9 seemed to make it not work at all

New:
 • Added LAME Presets "--preset insane, fast extreme, extreme, fast standard, standard, fast medium, medium
 • Added VBR new and changed VBR to VBR old in the encoding properies.
 • Default for new installs is --preset fast standard. Better quality and it will encode about 40% faster than the previous VBR Default.
 • Users who upgrade will have their VBR options set to use the faster encoding method.
 • Added Confirmation to save preferences when closing the preferences window and not clicking OK.
 • Added text labels to the main interface buttons for clarity
 • Set default work queue location to /Users/USERNAME/Library/Application Support/CD Stack/Work Queue per Apple's human interface guidelines. The MP3 output still defaults to the same location /Users/USERNAME/CD Stack/MP3

CD Stack ReviewGood Product Overall - Version: 1.0.2, 6/18/2006 08:39PM PST

I was looking for a product to handle some encoding I do on a regular basis and to replace a free ripper I was using. I have a one hour long church service that needs to be converted from cd to mp3 for use on our website. Most mp3 rippers do use the L.A.M.E engine but non of them seperate the encoding and writing process like this does. The real selling point here is time. It takes 3-5 minutes to enclode the entire 1 hour long service then the writing is done in the background so I can put in another cd to rip. At first I must say I thought $14.95 for a bit high for a product that several free applications can do. However the time it saves me is well worth the money. I also have to say the support for the product is very good. At first CD Stack created a couple of files that did not work. I wrote to the authors and they responded quickly and eger to help. I was not able to get CD Stack to reproduce the problem however it's been a few months and it still hasn't happened again. I upgraded to v1.0.2 today without any trouble everything is working great.

Developer says, unlike other software that uses L.A.M.E. for the Mac, CD Stack does not require you to use iTunes. It completely stands alone.

Don't know what they mean by that. I'm an audio pro, use at least 5 different audio products that use the L.A.M.E. engine for MP3 encoding, and not one of the "requires" you to use iTunes.

Except, of course, iTunes.

(No rating untilI try it...)

This utility is a great idea. I'll wait until you add AAC and Apple Lossless encoding capability before trying it out.
