Product Description:

If you like using the unix foundation of OS X, you'll love Man Handler. The "man" pages are a great help when working in unix, but using them in a Terminal window is less than satisfactory.

Man Handler lets you open multiple man pages, returns the whole text of the page you're after, and the files are saveable so you don't have to look up frequently used commands over and over. Plus the OS X services (make sticky note, summarize, speak text, etc.) are all usable by Man Handler. Written in AppleScript Studio with source code. An example of creating a document-based AS Studio application.

What's new in this version:

Revised the zoom settings for the document window. Previously, zooming the window caused the window to zoom to the full horizontal display size, wasting a lot of space. Document windows now size to only what is needed to display the man page without causing extra line feeds.

The document window now selects the text box when new windows are created, so you can type a command and go.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

Man Handler CommentaryThe problem with very old reviews - Version: 2.01u, 11/2/2008 09:49PM PST

GGGlen
ManOpen seems to be favoured, but the simple fact is that it hasn't been updated (here, at least) since 2005.

ManOpen is PPC only!

Man Handler Reviewpales in comparison to ManOpen - Version: 1.2, 7/29/2006 08:23PM PST

unlike certain other efforts, this is a nice, clean, simple implementation, but it seems likely the author dove in without awareness of ManOpen, which in comparison to ManHandler adds:
  • hyperlinks to related man entries
  • apropos
  • a command-line tool
  • proper text styling
  • printing that works
  • ability to search within a man page
  • ability to page with space/shift-space
  • lots of control over the overall experience/appearance
in my opinion, without some sort of conceptual breakthrough, ManOpen has this category sewn up
