Aurora ReviewA disappointing release - Version: 4.0.8, 3/2/2008 01:36PM PST

I used to use Aurora as my default alarm clock, but everything I liked about it then is now missing.
I don't take my Mac to bed with me so it was great to be able set the alarm and for AirTunes to direct the music to the speakers by my bed. In this release you can no longer do that. All output comes out of the Mac no matter what set of external speakers I use. So it seems that Aurora is bypassing AirTunes.
The other backward step is that Aurora seems to no longer pick up the playlists on your iPod if it's connected to iTunes. I manually manage my music so invariably my most important music is on the iPod because I listen to that more than iTunes.

So now the search is on for some better software. Bad move on the part of the developers.

Alarm Clock is the best alarm clock application and it is free. The only problem - it is not compatible with Leopard, yet.

Aurora ReviewApplication quit - Version: 3.3.4, 9/23/2007 04:13PM PST

I WOULD love this application. It spared me from having EyeTV or DVD menus playing all night after I fall asleep, however, the best option for this currently is to put your computer in sleep mode. I have background applications running that I want to continuing running, so this is not ideal. If only there were an option to simply quit the desired app after sleep countdown, I would consider it perfect for me needs and be happy to donate.

Aurora ReviewAurora is the best sleeper/alarm we've tried!! - Version: 3.3.2 r586, 5/11/2007 07:57AM PST

. . . it doesn't get used regularly, just for the occasional treat .... but it's never failed yet, and is great at playing iTunes while you fall asleep and then sending the Mac to sleep. So .. thanks, Jonas!

Re comments below:
• yes, there are lots of updates, so turning the autoupdate off and using versiontracker's RSS is the best option for keeping up to date ....
• err, yes, if Aurora's set to 'wake from sleep', then it pays to send your Mac to sleep! Otherwise, it'd be a bit like arranging to pick the children up from school in the afternoon, and forgetting to send them to school in the morning!

Which reminds me ... I have to go!

Short comment: Aurora is the best iTunes sleeper and alarm that I have ever tried.

Aurora CommentaryUntrustworthy -- assuming I did it right - Version: 3.3.1, 4/29/2007 07:05AM PST

Been using a Mac since 1995 and my VCR doesn't flash 12:00. So, you'd think I would be able to use this application... but no. I just do not understand why it does not work. I wish I could recommend it -- and am a little more lenient with most apps because I want to help the little guys (still let them know of problems, however) -- but AN ALARM CLOCK?? Man, that's do or die. DO OR DIE.

Aurora Reviewitunes playback never works - Version: 3.2.3, 4/3/2007 01:12PM PST

Aurora has never been abled to start playback from itunes and i don't use airtunes and never put my powerbook to sleep. Running OS X 10.4.9. And while it uses the fallback player to start playback, very often nothing will play making it totally unreliable as an alarm.

Aurora ReviewNot a Mission Critical Alarm - Version: 3.2.3, 3/4/2007 02:14AM PST

How many times does an alarm have to fail to ring before you throw it out?

Aurora is free - and that's nice. This app, however, sometimes decide to just not go off, thereby totally nullifying its purpose as an alarm. There are three main problems I have encountered:

Auto-update. Aurora wakes from sleep, finds that there is a new update, and instead of playing the music to wake me up AND posting the new update message, the new update message prevents the music from playing = late for work.

Wake from sleep... or not at all. If you set Aurora to wake from sleep, you had better actually put your computer to sleep. If you don't, Aurora won't run. No more overnight downloads.

Random errors. Sometimes I wake up naturally, an hour past the intended time, and find that Aurora just decided it couldn't play such and such a music file in iTunes.

The feature set looks great, the developer seems to be actively improving it due to the large number of updates (which prevented my music from playing... until I turned off autoupdate) but this app fails in the most fundamental area -- wake me up. If these error were fixed, I'd be interested again.

Works perfectly, basically the best freeware app that I've run across recently.

Thanks so much, just what I was looking for.
