Product Description:
HoudahSpot is a file search tool based on Apple's Spotlight technology. It enables users to quickly create and store powerful search queries. HoudahSpot has been designed from the ground up with ease of use and convenience in mind. We feel it is not the user that needs to be educated, but the software that should be made to the user's need. HoudahSpot leverages Apple's powerful and fast Spotlight engine. It improves in many ways over the default interface in Mac OS X 10.4:
- Ability to express complex queries
- Flexible browsing of results
- It does not waste this engine's horsepower to run searches before the user is done entering criteria
- User definable templates
- Hot key access to saved searches: Recent Documents, Applications, ...
What's new in this version:
This version fixes the feedback / bug report feature. This has been non-functional for previous 1.1.x releases. Sorry about that.

Finally, my files seem to belong to me again - I can now find them all. I particularly like the detailed control it gives over searches: eg “find all files modified in the last 36 hours other than folders” or “find all files of type A, containing the word B, in folder C, modified before date D, other than those containing word E in the filename”. You can save complex searches and recall them with a keyboard shortcut. Its quite helpful to study the templates in the menubar (eg 'Long lost files'). It was only when I did this that I finally grasped how to set up a boolean "not" search.

This appears to be the most complete, nice, easy and intuitive SpotLight substitute GUI. It also provides a lot of information on the found files. Plus, searches can stay "live", meaning that you leave the results window open and any new files that match the search criteria are added to the list in real time. It definitely lowers my search frustration.
