I have used this program for DVD production and archiving video lessons from online sources. It is one of the best shareware programs in my application folder. This newest version promises to get rid of renamed files....works for me!
Nice tool

A Timer would be nice for unattended recordings - Version: 1.68, 10/23/2008 03:16AM PST

I would recommend some form of a timer to be built in to allow for unattended recordings,; very useful for long recordings.
I suggest that this comes with some options:
1. start and/or end times
2. Start could be now, fixed time, or in # hrs/mins/secs from now
3. End time can be either fixed time or selection of duration with hours, mins, secs.

Save & Replace does not work

I have been testing iShowU and comparing with other tools. Works quite well and is fairly intuitive.
IN my testing though, I found a small but annoying bug...if you try to save a recording with the same name as an existing file and ask to replace the original, iShowU still proceeds with the recording but at the end, the original file is not replaced.
Where did the recording go? (I suspect it is only in the temp directory). NO new file gets created.
Please fix.

Sound Fix and Three Versions of iShowU

After a few missteps, I finally got iShowU to do what I wanted. Some notes:
* There are three products: iShowU ($20.00), iShowU HD ($29.95), and iShowU HD Pro ($59.95); see the Feature Comparison chart on the company's web site for the differences. The cheapest version is craftily listed third on the purchase page, so don't accidentally pay more than you need to.
* Sound also did not work for me until I went into the Sound panel of my System Preferences and selected Soundflower (2ch) as the Input device.

Full Capture

Most screen capture apps use interframe compression (like an animated GIF) and variable frame rate to reduce CPU load and file size. Sometimes that is desirable, but it also makes iShowU, with its truly movie-like capture, a rare animal. iShowU also works under Tiger -- a plus for a recent task where I had to capture something in Classic (which Leopard does not support). This app is a definite must for your video toolbox.
IShowU is wonderful with two exceptions

I've been using IShowU on a daily basis for the past 2 months. It's a huge improvement over SnapZPro in terms of speed of video compression and ease of use. I can highly recommend it to anyone who needs to record their screen activity--whether you're creating tutorials or if you're recording webinars for later viewing. My main use for IShowU is recording 1 to 2 hour live webinars to view later.
There are two serious drawbacks that I hope the developer will eventually resolve:
1) If the program crashes (or the computer loses power) while recording, the saved video data still remains in IShowU's temporary folder. However the developer says that currently, this recovered video file is unusable, so in effect you've lost the entire recording.
This is a serious drawback if you're recording a one time web event, and the program/your computer crashes before you've saved it.
I find myself saving video every 20 minutes during longer events, just to be sure I don't lose it all, if there's a problem.
2) There seem to be some unresolved issues with sound. After launching the application (and before starting a recording) I always test the Level indicator (by lowering and raising the volume --- producing the click-click-click sound which in turn lights up the level indicator on IShowU). About 1 in 5 times, the program is not receiving the system audio. I simply quit and restart the program and it's fine.
The more serious issue is that sometimes, even after checking that the sound is working--approx. about once a week--I'll find that one of the saved video files is missing the audio altogether.
I like this program a great deal, and it's my hope the developer can resolve these issues.

I only tried the demo version for one day, I recorded 8 movie clips without changing any settings.
I checked the first four which were fine, of the last four clips - two had audio but no visual, and one had visual but no audio.
I dont know if this is just a problem with the demo but I won't bother buying the full version to find out.
The program is good, logical and easy to use shame it gives disappointing inconsistent results.

iShowU you allows you to easily change the temp/scratch disk location to another drive.
iShowU also easily allows you to choose QuickTime compatible formats/ codecs for easy output.
iShowU is also cheaper, even the pro HD version is cheaper than SnapzPro.
Both normal and HD versions works on Leopard 10.5.7 at the time of me writing this.
Great to see Kiwi developers working hard.
