The two times I've had kernel panics after a software update was because I'd stupidly left a USB device plugged in.
Perhaps there should be a reminder flagged up with each update.

What difference does it make to THIS update what users of PREVIOUS updates experienced?

Their comments are irrelevant.

Apple Security Update ReviewProblem - Beware! - Version: 2009-006, 11/9/2009 06:54PM PST

G5 tower would not restart after update.

I never had this happen before and I have used Macs for well over a decade.

Also there was no spinning progress indicator.

I waited around ten minutes and finally did a hard restart.

Makes me wonder how many other things Apple missed.

Apple Security Update ReviewBroke my computer - very bad!!!! - Version: 2009-004, 8/25/2009 12:36AM PST

I have not had any problems with security updates for years now. But this one completely hosed my computer. I run Tiger on a G4 so I admit it is old, but after applying the update mail stopped working. Safari and Firefox also refused to open without crashing. Some apps could still reach the internet but not the ones I wanted. I believe many other apps were also not working quite right but I gave up trying to fix this after the usual repairing permissions, trashing preferences etc. failed to do anything. I luckily had a backup of the OS which I restored to a new drive and now I am mostly okay but I will not reinstall this and I would warn anyone with an old G4 to avoid this like the plague.

Apple Security Update ReviewNo problems here - Version: 2009-004, 8/13/2009 05:53AM PST

I just installed it via SoftwareUpdate on several Macs... No slowdowns, no issues at all.

I haven't had to zap my PRAM since I installed some RAM like 6 years ago!

One piece of advice, install AppleJack and use that in single user mode. Much more comprehensive than just running fsck.

Apple Security Update Troubleshooting ReportZap PRAM - Version: 2009-004, 8/12/2009 07:01PM PST

The only flakiness I had after this update was a strange slowdown in quicktime/video, but a PRAM zap fixed that. I also repaired permissions after this one.

It also disabled 1Password plugin in Safari, but updating 1Password fixed that.

I don't think the update is bad, but it's the most finicky in a long long time. Most of the Leopard updates have been pretty trouble-free.

Things to try if you're having problems:
1) Always use the Combo updater for point updates
2) Repair permissions
2) Zap PRAM, seems especially important with this particular update.

Apple Security Update ReviewPlease note... - Version: 2009-004, 8/12/2009 07:00PM PST

that the ratings on this are from 2008 security releases;
So far none for 2009-so I would guess few or no problems

The scorecard to date:
Here we are approaching Sept 2009 and we see security fix #4- for 2009,
(8 for 2008, and 3 for 2007 from system 10's release: SU 2007: 7,8,9 onwards)
system bug upgrade 8 (10.5.1-8)-since June, 2007;
Since Snow Leopard is about to hit the front door (ill bet BEFORE Labor Day[RIP]) we may see another couple for 10.5 before it goes to archival;

So, lets say 25 total fixes overall for system 10.5, now over 2 years old (June, 2007)
In 2 years, surely Windows has had what-? 250 security fixes, and 2,500 overall?

Next we will observe a rough 2.5 pages of benign 'security alerts' on SECUNICA's "Annual Index of 200x Virus Alerts" for Mac OS 10.x;
Once a year (actually in 15 years of Mac use-and no virus detection software-it slows things down considerable; ONE-maybe TWO real, contagious
destructive viruses
And easily 25 pages of REAL, active, destructive, out-in-the-wild security alerts for MS Windows.x; CONSTANTLY
And thats being kind to MS... ;-)

That always shuts the MS flunkies up fast-and they change the subject;

If you repair permissions BEFORE you install any system update-and AFTER to be safe, and have ONLY the installer and ONLY the FINDER running-
nothing else-check you dock for the white dots-then turn them all off, you should have no problems;
It would even be better to do a SAFE BOOT install-this applies ONLY to SYSTEM patches-
no need for SAFARI, QT, JAVA, AP, i-Apps etc or any other apps at all:

1. first, restart and hold down 'cmd-S' you will get verbal abuse text-ignore
when at command line prompt ($), do an FS -y (file system) check/repair
(if Journaling is enabled, run FS -yn, then FS -yf [-yf= yes, force*])
IF system was 'modified' or 'repaired' RUN AGAIN to be sure;
2. restart, and hold down the shift key, log in to SAFE BOOT.
repair permissions;
3. install the SYSTEM update.
4. restart. login normally
5. repair permissions again
6. its all good (or should be)

Writing this several hours after install...
works for me

Apple Security Update ReviewScrewed up my computer! - Version: 2008-008, 1/9/2009 05:50PM PST

I installed this update on Monday and my computer became permanently stuck on the gray apple screen with the spinning wheel after restart. I would try to re-boot it and nothing changed. Apple doesn't provide support for their updates when they mess up your computer unless you pay them which I think is pretty lousy! I looked through a bunch of forums and tried resetting the PRAM and booting up in safe mode which didn't do anything. I also booted up from my external drive which is my former hard drive that I cloned when I updated my hard drive. I tried cleaning out the cache, repairing the permissions in disk utility ( which was fine) and checking the start up items. What finally worked was booting from my original OS X disk and performing an archive and install. I followed the advice on the following link: http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060322080433175
Several days later everything seems to be working fine, but I refuse to install the update again until it is fixed. It seems I am not the only one having problems with this update!

Apple Security Update ReviewDon't download Mac security update 2008-008 - Version: 2008-008, 12/21/2008 12:21PM PST

My MacBook worked fine,,,,that is until I downloaded and installed the latest security update from Apple.

MacBook is not functioning anywhere close to normal.

Apps are hanging up or quiting altogether.

Each time I click the mouse the Dock goes away for around 2 seconds and then comes back.

Very, very sluggish on all tasks.

At least with my PC, if something goes wrong with an update I can fix it.

I have not fix for this as of now.
