Ron LI never had this happen before and I have used Macs for well over a decade.
Also there was no spinning progress indicator.
I waited around ten minutes and finally did a hard restart.
Makes me wonder how many other things Apple missed.
Broke my computer - very bad!!!!

I haven't had to zap my PRAM since I installed some RAM like 6 years ago!
One piece of advice, install AppleJack and use that in single user mode. Much more comprehensive than just running fsck.

sfericIt also disabled 1Password plugin in Safari, but updating 1Password fixed that.
I don't think the update is bad, but it's the most finicky in a long long time. Most of the Leopard updates have been pretty trouble-free.
Things to try if you're having problems:
1) Always use the Combo updater for point updates
2) Repair permissions
2) Zap PRAM, seems especially important with this particular update.

So far none for 2009-so I would guess few or no problems
The scorecard to date:
Here we are approaching Sept 2009 and we see security fix #4- for 2009,
(8 for 2008, and 3 for 2007 from system 10's release: SU 2007: 7,8,9 onwards)
system bug upgrade 8 (10.5.1-8)-since June, 2007;
Since Snow Leopard is about to hit the front door (ill bet BEFORE Labor Day[RIP]) we may see another couple for 10.5 before it goes to archival;
So, lets say 25 total fixes overall for system 10.5, now over 2 years old (June, 2007)
In 2 years, surely Windows has had what-? 250 security fixes, and 2,500 overall?
Next we will observe a rough 2.5 pages of benign 'security alerts' on SECUNICA's "Annual Index of 200x Virus Alerts" for Mac OS 10.x;
Once a year (actually in 15 years of Mac use-and no virus detection software-it slows things down considerable; ONE-maybe TWO real, contagious
destructive viruses
And easily 25 pages of REAL, active, destructive, out-in-the-wild security alerts for MS Windows.x; CONSTANTLY
And thats being kind to MS... ;-)
That always shuts the MS flunkies up fast-and they change the subject;
If you repair permissions BEFORE you install any system update-and AFTER to be safe, and have ONLY the installer and ONLY the FINDER running-
nothing else-check you dock for the white dots-then turn them all off, you should have no problems;
It would even be better to do a SAFE BOOT install-this applies ONLY to SYSTEM patches-
no need for SAFARI, QT, JAVA, AP, i-Apps etc or any other apps at all:
1. first, restart and hold down 'cmd-S' you will get verbal abuse text-ignore
when at command line prompt ($), do an FS -y (file system) check/repair
(if Journaling is enabled, run FS -yn, then FS -yf [-yf= yes, force*])
IF system was 'modified' or 'repaired' RUN AGAIN to be sure;
2. restart, and hold down the shift key, log in to SAFE BOOT.
repair permissions;
3. install the SYSTEM update.
4. restart. login normally
5. repair permissions again
6. its all good (or should be)
Writing this several hours after install...
works for me

atalaya-ravenSeveral days later everything seems to be working fine, but I refuse to install the update again until it is fixed. It seems I am not the only one having problems with this update!

Randy WallaceMacBook is not functioning anywhere close to normal.
Apps are hanging up or quiting altogether.
Each time I click the mouse the Dock goes away for around 2 seconds and then comes back.
Very, very sluggish on all tasks.
At least with my PC, if something goes wrong with an update I can fix it.
I have not fix for this as of now.
Perhaps there should be a reminder flagged up with each update.
