The two times I've had kernel panics after a software update was because I'd stupidly left a USB device plugged in.
Perhaps there should be a reminder flagged up with each update.

What difference does it make to THIS update what users of PREVIOUS updates experienced?

Considering the feedback on this Security update and that I haven't had one, single, solitary Apple update NOT cause considerable problems - similar to those mentioned here and worse - I may wait and wait before applying this update on my customized Mac Pro Early Release 2009.
Apple, I think, really needs to apply more and better "quality control" to its software updates.
