fip ReviewV. 1.2.0 Puts Info in a Window, Works Great! - Version: 1.2.0, 3/12/2007 08:08PM PST

Contrary to previous review, this version puts the addresses in a window, with "Copy" buttons next to each address. It accurately listed both my Internal (LAN) & External (Router) IP addresses. Simple & useful.

fip ReviewVery good idea, but hardly usable in present form. - Version: 1.1.1, 3/5/2006 07:59AM PST

This is a very good idea that seems to work to work well, i.e., fip correctly finds the IP address for LAN (local) and WAN (ISP). And thanks to make it free

But unfortunately, it is unusable in it present form because the IP address(es) are dislayed ONLY in the fip icon in the dock.
So guess what? My icons in the dock are so small, it is impossible to read anything! One solution would be to use the magnification feature to get a temporary larger view of the icon by mousing over. This works, but still unusable; I doubt anybody but beginners turn on Magnification in the dock!

Fortunately, the user can copy the IP addresses to the clipboard, via the Edit menu, but it took me a while to figure this out. Providing Copy via the Edit menu is standard, but the app has no window, it feels the application has no UI and it did not cross my mind initially to go check the Edit menu.

Comment to the developper:
- fip should offer an alternate presentation of the IP addresses, not only in the dock. I think the dock icon should only show the letters IP so it has a chance to be readable and spotted in a crowded dock.
- Give fip a window! Without a window, it feels the app has no UI
- Display clearly in the window the Local and External IP addresses, and label each IP address using the same terminology used with routers, i.e., LAN and WAN (with maybe "Local" and "External" in parenthesis to be more self-explanatory).
- provide explicit buttons next to each IP address to copy the address to the clipboard.

Here are details on my individual ratings:
- Overall: Poor - I find the app hardly usable in its present form.
- Ease of use: Poor - basically unusable due to icon in dock unreadable
- Support/Doc: Poor - No documentation or read-me file found
- Features: 4 stars - It finds correctly the LAN and WAN IP address and allows copying, but is disconcerting (no window, no feel of having a UI)
- Quality/Stability: 4 Stars - No unstabilty found, but not tried very long
- Price: 5 stars - Can't beat Free! Thanks again to the effort of the developer! (but please one more effort to make it perfect!)

Note: Sorry for being harsh and saying the app is unusable. Technically speaking, it is usable, but in a macintosh world, what is hard to use turns out to be unused, hence unusable in practical terms.
