This was developed for my Mother In Law, whom I love very much,
though she freezes when attempting to do this simplest tasks with her
computer, especially going beyond the main screen of any program. I
didn't want to drive 60 miles to do it for her, ARD is not setup on her
machine (still on my list), so I made this app and emailed it to her.
She is happy, and I am happy.
Might she still download and open infected pictures of "cute puppies",
sure but I have done what I can to mitigate that risk.
I used ARD and the shell script to update my iMac Lab. I am happy that
yet again, I do not have to ARD in or drive to the various locations and
run Safari on each of them to disable the activity, nor do I have to
rely on an email to all my users with directions to disable the
activity.
The source code is available, as well as alternative instructions
because no this is not and should not be needed for everyone. Does
everyone know what the easy fix is? Apparently not. Does this
application prevent anyone from downloading infected documents and
running them with Safari and or other browsers, no. Am I taking this a
little too seriously, obviously. Am I as myopic as previous posters,
absolutely, yet still not as cool :(
There is no accounting for common sense or DIY ability, nor is there any
place like home.
As time passes, better and more complete solutions will become available to us all.

Not specifically mentioned is that the item to deselect is under the "General" section of the Safari preferences menu.

Users having previously installed Safairy do not need to remove anything from their machines, as there is nothing left behind from Safairy.
