Children live up to (or down to) their expectations. That's part of growing up. A good teacher has high standards and encourages all students, even the problem ones, to live up to those standards. In my experience, British teachers appear more aware of this than their American counterparts, and I've always thought this is because they devote less time to pigeon-holing and more time to education. It would be sad if this encouraged the demise of that advantage...
