TechTool Pro ReviewSaved my hard drive! - Version: 4.6.1, 10/20/2009 12:11AM PST

My Mac OS partition crashed. Was on AppleCare phone support for a couple hours and they couldn't help, so they recommended I download TechTool. It came free with my AppleCare service. I just let it run and do its thing, and it fixed whatever was wrong with my hard drive and saved me from losing all my data. Highly recommend!

TechTool Pro ReviewExcellent utility, but .... - Version: 4.6.1, 7/11/2008 03:13AM PST

Tech Tool Pro saved me from computing desaster more than once! It is very reliable and it's features to prevent problems or at least warn early work perfectly.

However, there is one major drawback: Tech Tool Pro is extremely slow when defragmenting the hard disk. Even on my 8-Core-3-GHz MacPro it took more than 2 hours to defrag the internal hard disk which is less than 25% full. Tech Tool Pro uses only less than 20% of the available CPU-power (according to Apple activity monitor) and uses only 64 MB of physical RAM. Since defragmentation has a lot to do with reading data from the hard disk to RAM and write them back to hard disk this seems to be one of the bottle-necks for performance. In a time when even the cheapest consumer level computers are sold with at least 1 GB of RAM this strategy is completely outdated! For 10 years now every single Macintosh comuter was sold with at least 256 MB RAM and Tech Tool Pro does not even run in these machines since it requires at MacOS 10.4 which itself requires at least a G4 computer (which shipped with a minimum of 512 MB RAM).

Recently I have had many problems with my hard drives, both internal and external. I had two external Western Digital drives fail. I tried Diskwarrior but it failed to fix any of my drives. I recently updated TechTool Pro and decided to use it to examine my drives. It found directory problems in both my primary drive and my external 1TB WD drive. The program repaired both my main drive and my external drive. I am now able to use my external drive (which I had gotten an RMA to return it) and my internal drive now allows me to operate normally (I previously was unable to update Microsoft Office 2008 because of the directory problems,; now I can update successfully). Thank you for your great product! Doug Unruh

TechTool Pro ReviewUnreliable - Version: 4.6.1, 3/23/2008 08:15AM PST

I have just run Tech Tool Pro 4.6.1 on my 10.5.2 internal drive (from an external boot drive) and it reported 'mismatched bitmap' errors in the directory (which it couldn't fix); but Disk Utility and DiskWarrior 4.1 both reported that the disk was fine.

To be sure, I used DiskWarrior to rebuild and replace the directory and immediately ran Tech Tool again -- for it to report the same bitmap mismatch error. I ran the other utilities again and they still said the disk was fine.

What gives? Is Tech Tool a waste of money?

TechTool Pro ReviewDO NOT USE THIS PIECE OF JUNK - IT WILL WRECK YOUR MAC - Version: 4.6.1, 1/23/2008 12:00AM PST

Stay away from this awful app - it is DANGEROUS to your computer.

Run version 4.6.1 on a G5 duo 2.3gig with Leopard. I just pressed the 'go' button to check my hardware. To my surprise (and near panic) my second internal HD would not mount afterwards. I could still see it with Disk Utilities but it would neither repair nor mount it. Nothing would work. I had to run Diskwarrior and repair the damage that this pos Techtools did.

This app is a hazard. Do not use this. You have been warned.

TechTool Pro ReviewPROBLEMS with this release!! - Version: 4.6.1, 12/5/2007 12:03AM PST

Unresolved ERROR messages...

I have an external LaCie 1TB drive dedicated as the OSX Leopard (v10.5.1) TimeMachine backup.

When I run the Performance —> Directory Maintenance routine on this drive, I consistently get the following message:

Directory Maintenance Failed. Insufficient Memory. (-108)

I have run this same diagnostic a) booting up from the TechTool Pro CD, b) from the installed version on the internal hard drive, and c) restarted from the eDrive created from the software. ALL still result in the above error.

Several other quirks **new** to this release:

• When restarted from the eDrive, the main (internal) drive CANNOT be diagnosed with Apple's Disk Utility. ("drive cannot be unmounted")
• When restarted from the eDrive, cannot run critical Volume Structures checks on internal drive because "drive cannot be unmounted"
• Even though my iMac is restarted from the eDrive, it does not appear to be the boot volume, and the internal Macintosh HD still appears as the startup drive.

Pretty confusing.

This is an alert to update from v 4.5.x to 4.6.1 for those of us that bought the Ugrade DVD. It is however, seemingly impossible to navigate from the link above - or even by selecting "Update now" from within TTPro - to a place where you can actually download this update.

TechTool Pro CommentaryUpgrade, not update - Version: 4.6.1, 11/29/2007 09:16PM PST

Micromat confuses the issue by calling this an update when, in fact, it's an upgrade. As such, it costs less than previous upgrades. But it's designed to work on a whole new version of the Mac OS. This is a significant change and no doubt took considerable work to develop. In my opinion, the charge is nominal under the circumstances.
