TechTool Pro 4 is the premier diagnostic and repair utility for the Macintosh running Mac OS X. Among the features included in TechTool Pro 4 are S.M.A.R.T. testing to check for impending hard drive failure, email notification if problems are found by the configurable automatic diagnostics routines, optimization/defragmentation, and many other drive and hardware tests to help pinpoint computer problems.
One of the most innovative features of TechTool Pro 4 is the eDrive. An eDrive is a bootable Mac OS X emergency partition containing TechTool Pro. It is created on one of your computer's hard drives without the need to reformat it. If you have problems with your normal startup hard drive volume, you can boot the computer and run TechTool Pro from the eDrive. This allows for recovery and repair without the need to startup from the TechTool Pro CD. This feature is especially useful to notebook users because it negates the need to carry an emergency TechTool Pro CD while traveling. It also eliminates the need for a new CD when the program is updated.

What's new in this version:
The version 4.6.2 DVD will boot all currently shipping Mac models, including the new 2008 Mac models. Current owners of TechTool Pro 4 can purchase the TechTool Pro 4.6.2 DVD Update for $25 plus shipping and handling. Micromat also offers an Annual Subscription Service for $99. This is geared to owners of TechTool Pro 4 who wish to receive each update or upgrade automatically on DVD as soon as it is released.

Recently I have had many problems with my hard drives, both internal
and external. I had two external Western Digital drives fail. I tried
Diskwarrior but it failed to fix any of my drives. I recently updated
TechTool Pro and decided to use it to examine my drives. It found
directory problems in both my primary drive and my external 1TB WD
drive. The program repaired both my main drive and my external drive.
I am now able to use my external drive (which I had gotten an RMA to
return it) and my internal drive now allows me to operate normally (I
previously was unable to update Microsoft Office 2008 because of the
directory problems,; now I can update successfully). Thank you for
your great product!

I have just run Tech Tool Pro 4.6.1 on my 10.5.2 internal drive (from an external boot drive) and it reported 'mismatched bitmap' errors in the directory (which it couldn't fix); but Disk Utility and DiskWarrior 4.1 both reported that the disk was fine.
To be sure, I used DiskWarrior to rebuild and replace the directory and immediately ran Tech Tool again -- for it to report the same bitmap mismatch error. I ran the other utilities again and they still said the disk was fine.
What gives? Is Tech Tool a waste of money?

However, there is one major drawback: Tech Tool Pro is extremely slow when defragmenting the hard disk. Even on my 8-Core-3-GHz MacPro it took more than 2 hours to defrag the internal hard disk which is less than 25% full. Tech Tool Pro uses only less than 20% of the available CPU-power (according to Apple activity monitor) and uses only 64 MB of physical RAM. Since defragmentation has a lot to do with reading data from the hard disk to RAM and write them back to hard disk this seems to be one of the bottle-necks for performance. In a time when even the cheapest consumer level computers are sold with at least 1 GB of RAM this strategy is completely outdated! For 10 years now every single Macintosh comuter was sold with at least 256 MB RAM and Tech Tool Pro does not even run in these machines since it requires at MacOS 10.4 which itself requires at least a G4 computer (which shipped with a minimum of 512 MB RAM).
