Product Description:

Zex is a space based role playing game presented in a retro-esque style. Presented in a top-down view, Zex combines elements of arcade, role playing, trading and character advancement. Zex runs on Windows and Macintosh based computers.

Background

The R'Mparians have invaded our Solar System and are trying to deplete our defences to the point we can no longer defend ourselves against them.

In a last ditch effort a secret ship known as Zex was designed and built from captured alien hardware. Disguised as a R'Mparian vessel, it was sent through a warphole into the R'Mparian galaxy along with a few Earth Motherships.

As the game starts, you find yourself in command of Zex as a lowly Ensign. Your job is to force a retreat of the R'Mparians and secure a peaceful future for Mother Earth. Not an easy task, and not a task accomplished in a few minutes!

Of course, you may want to just work on improving your rank, making money, pirating the odd bit of cargo or generally just exploring the galaxy. It is up to you.

Features

  • Custom written 3d engine with software renderer enables Zex to run on low-end machines.

    Zex CommentaryZex impressions - Version: 0.99.3B3, 4/2/2006 04:45AM PST

Play Zex for a couple of hours and you'll be fleeing overwhelming odds, trying to balance the requirment to get away with not running out of fuel, hoping against hope that the nearest friendly space station isn't docking something when you get there, and generally kicking ass (and almost certainly getting your ass kicked).

I can't claim to have tried every game in the 'elite' genre, but I did give EV Nova a shot. Zex graphics are lower resolution and simpler (does that mean worse? Zex's retro explosions are cool), and the gameplay is very different. I played EV Nova for a coule of hours, during which I visited a few planets, saw some planet graphics, tried to get used to how sloooow it played compare to Zex...

Other games may have deeper plots, more logical back stories and more planetside options, but if you just want to blow up the bad guys (and who doesn't?), Zex is well worth a look.

Compared to other games in the "Elite" genre, both the graphics quality and gameplay experience of Zex are decidedly inferior. Please take several good long looks at OOLite (free), the Escape Velocity series, etc.
