Product Description:

Stellarium is free GPL software which renders realistic skies in real time with openGL.

With Stellarium, you really see what you can see with your eyes, binoculars or a small telescope.

Stellarium is also used in planetariums.

What's new in this version:

  • I opted to not follow Da Woon Jung's lead on a highly Cocoa-ified port. Da Woon Jung's 0.7.1 build materials are included on this bundle (macosx-xcode-0.7.1.tar.gz) for any who would like to try to improve on this build following his lead more than I.
  • I did use Da Woon Jung's materials as the basis for this 0.8.0 build, and am indebted to him for blazing the trail.
  • I had to modify Da Woon Jung's StelConfig.[ch] to track what main.cpp wanted, less, essentially.
  • My goal was to have as few conditional pre-processing directives connected to the mac as possible.
  • I used the packaged intl, gettext, and .gmo files for the build. I did this mostly because I could not see a straight-forward way of having the mac localization Objective-C code work nicely with the STD string and wstring code in the 0.8.0 src. Having the mac speak gettext seemed the easier route.
  • I did have to alter main.cpp, translator.h and translator.cpp. LANG in the environment seemed to be the magic variable for what language I wanted to set. And, oddly, the UTF8_to_UNICODE function in translator.cpp needed a change that was surprising to me about endianess.
  • I updated to the latest and greatest SDL, 1.2.10, and its SDLMain.[hm]. I had to create my own OpenGL viewport in SDLMain.c (OpenGL calls would BAD_ACCESS until I did this), and I'm pretty sure that's wrong. I am not an SDL expert at the moment.
  • I statically linked to fink versions of png, freetype, and SDL and SDL_image, and to Mac versions of iconv and z. To do builds similar to how I did this, you'll need fink (fink.sf.net).
  • As I've said several times here, I am not an expert on the involved proper nouns, so I welcome constructive criticism and correction.
  • I have included my macosx folder and the three files in src that I had to modify here as macosx-xcode-0.8.0.tar.gz.

Stellarium ReviewWorks very well in Leopard 10.5.1 on a PB G4/867 - Version: 0.9.1, 1/17/2008 12:00AM PST

I've had no problems with this program -- and it is proving really spectacular here in North America in the winter -- the only time in the South that we can see the night sky clearly. The program hasn't 'hung' my system, 'though it takes a substantial amount of RAM. I wouldn't want to run this on a system with under 768 Mb installed.
