Product Description:

ScreenCaptureX will capture either a window, a section of your screen, or the entire screen as a JPEG file by default, and even allows you to add a caption below it if you wish. You can change the default format from JPEG to either PNG or PICT as well, and you can set the default name to whatever you want, and specify a target folder for the files to be saved to. This little app is great for creating web-based tutorials quickly and easily.

What's new in this version:

  • Version 1.4 adds a Save-as checkbox in the preferences which will lock in whatever file format you have checked and will allow you to rename the files as you capture them or after you add the caption.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 Intel
  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC

This guy is what i've been looking for. You can save in several formats (jpeg being the big one), and can selection a portion of the screen, the whole screen, or just a window. You can also set a timer to take a entire screenshot after 10 seconds (good if you need to alt-tab into a full screen program). Files are autosaved to your desktop or folder of choice. Well designed and performs well.

I made a minor adjustment to the code to make it work for OS 10.3.9. Had a couple of people who had problems with it and with their patient assistance. I was able to make it work properly for them as well. So, download a new copy if you had troubles as well. Thanks for trying this folks. I'll keep adding your ideas if there is enough interest.

ScreenCaptureX Developer NoteA few notes from the developer... - Version: 1.2, 1/29/2007 08:02AM PST

1. Remember that the counter for sequential naming starts at 1 each time you quit out and reopen ScreenCaptureX, so if you have images in your target folder already, the first one will be overwritten if you start taking new images. Best to move the old screenshots into a subfolder before starting to take more screen shots. I'll try to do something about this soon. Don't shoot me, okay?

2. On some larger screenshots, you might not see the right hand side of the image when the caption screen comes up. Don't worry, the file will be completely there on the saved image when you open it again after adding the caption and saving. Not sure why this happens, but I'm working on it.

3. Text is sometimes not exactly centered. I'm using an average of how wide the text should be for so many letters. It may vary somewhat with punctuation and spaces and such. Should get it pretty much in the ballpark, though for now. Working on this as well.

4. After saving a caption, the suffix is coming in all caps. I will fix this soon as well.

Keep these in mind as you try this app out. I think you'll find it helpful despite the things I'm working on, so I went ahead and posted the update.
