Product Description:

A free (GPL) program that generates, solves, and gives you meaningful hints on Sudoku puzzles. It can generate books of puzzles to take on the road with you, and it can generate puzzles larger (and smaller) than the standard 9 by 9. The preferences allow you to select your own color scheme, and to determine what techniques may be required to solve a puzzle it generates.

What's new in this version:

Fixed a compatibility issue with saving and reading files in versions of Mac OS X before 10.4. The program would get confused and stop because a new way of handling data does not exist in the older systems.

Operating System Requirements:

This product is designed to run on the following operating systems:

  • Mac OS X 10.4 PPC
  • Mac OS X 10.3.9
  • Mac OS X 10.3
  • Mac OS X 10.2

Additional Requirements:

  • Mac OS X 10.2 or higher

This program is addictive and fun. It is easy to use and the hints work well.

The inability to set levels is the most maddening shortcoming. I get more level 3's than anything else, and have solved a level 17.

The second most troubling issue involves eliminating candidates. When you manually eliminate a candidate and then find out many moves later, you must undo your work back to the point of your error to correct it. And you cannot assign a value to a square when the candidate has been eliminated, even if you now know it is right.

Finally, the help menu is quite limited.

I would also suggest blocking incorrect moves, including candidate elimination. I am always checking my inserts just to avoid extensive undos.

It has been a learning experience and my first real foray into Sudoku. It won't be my last.

Very nice, except I can't believe there's no way to set the difficulty of the puzzle it generates! Also, it seems that there's no way to scale the puzzle when you use the "booklet" feature. It is too small on a high resolution screen, and since the program scales individual puzzles so nicely, it's odd that it doesn't scale the books. Also, it would be good if it could print more than one or two puzzles per page- ideally letting one choose 1, 2, 4, or 9 puzzles per page for printing. It would be great to be able to print the booklets this way. And when you do print one puzzle, the scaling of the print is based on the size the current window is, which can be confusing. Still, it's simple and has good features and a good game-play interface. Great price. The most important thing is to add a difficulty selector- ever puzzle it generates is too easy!
