Memory hog ... used up to 55% of my processor speed (dual G4-500), preferences never opened, had to force quit. looks like it is designed for dial-up connection because the meter only goes up to 48.8KB.

No one has mentioned how huge the meter is; way too large, and unadjustable.
The preferences, though shown in the menu, only give the splash information,
an obvious programming error. I was looking for something much like
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest
which I think is still the best tool. Go there to check your speeds.

This app sucks 80% CPU utilization on my iBook. Pretty ridiculous considering what it does.

Nice interface design.

Not practical to use this program in it’s present state of development. It presents a large clock type interface but it is an application that gets lost in the background.

There is no ability to make any adjustments to the download clock other than move it around the screen. There are no preferences to adjust. You can only start it and stop it. There is also a standard window title bar that floats above the clock, almost as if it’s a completely separate element.

The following additions should be made:

Add the ability to change the size of the clock to a desired size.

Add the option to make the clock part of the desktop or a floating clock.

Get rid of the title bar.

Change the speed readings to reflect more of an average instead of instant readings. Currently, the needle is all over the place and almost unusable.

Add the option to change the scale of the speed readings.

That’s good for starters.

The closest competition is Net Monitor which has an almost infinite amount of options for customization. While Net Monitor is shareware, this is freeware so it should NOT have nearly as many features and functions. Even so, NetSpeedometer just doesn't seem useable at this point.

Good luck if you plan to develop this more.
