This project needs funding! You can help. - Version: 1.13.84, 3/22/2009 01:24PM PST

I'm not affiliated with the programmers who've been doing all the great work on D2X, but I am a fan. I've donated $50 to the project to help offset their costs, but it's not nearly enough to put a Mac in the developer's hands so he can continue working on the Mac version.
Right now D2X is stalled at v 1.13.84 for OS X. While work continues on Win and Linux, without a Mac the developer is unable to fix a few critical bugs in this otherwise-excellent game.
If you enjoy Descent please consider making a donation to the product. It doesn't have to be as big as mine, but a few bucks here and there from enough people can help him move the Mac version forward again, keeping us all happily playing D2X for years to come.
Donation links are available at the developer's site.

The link at the web site to v1.13.85 is broken (404). I'll check back there in a day or so. Thanks.
BTW: I'm a donor to the project; I think you do good work, it's been really great getting back into D2, and with your efforts it's better than ever. Hopefully more folks will donate to keep the motivation flowing - I gotta imagine maintaining and enhancing this is a big task.

Be very careful running this if you hold your Macbook on your lap(probably not recommended anyway). My cpu temp jumped to 86C and total meltdown is not far from that. If I didn't have temperature montior running I never would have known how hot it was getting. This app is a must btw for C2D Macbook owners http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Even though the graphics are very primitive this game is a real Cpu torture tester so be careful.

Great game, great dedication to the code of the game.
When trying to download the file for the Mac PPC version, I get:
"Not Found
The requested URL /downloads/d2x-xl-osx-1.13.44.dmg was not found on this server."
This also happened for the previous version 1.13.39

Solution to use USB joysticks with Descent 3! - Version: 1.11.39, 12/24/2007 08:57PM PST

I finally got D2X-XL working on my Mac Powerbook G4! It's my all-time favorite game! I'm currently using D2X-XL version 1.11.39 and is successfully able to play both Descent 1 and Descent 2 while running Mac OS 10.4.10. Although some users prefer a keyboard, I prefer only a flightstick, and I can't live without it. With Descent 1 and Descent 2, I'm currently using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro USB joystick, which works natively with Descent when running D2X-XL. However, figuring out a way to get a USB joystick to work with Descent 3 on my Powerbook G4 was indeed a problem. Because Descent 3 runs only in Classic mode, it doesn't recognize most USB joysticks (although the keyboard and mouse will still work). Therefore I searched long and hard until I finally found a solution. That solution is you need to buy a $20 shareware program called "USB Overdrive". USB Overdrive is a simple keyboard emulation software program that allows you to remap the buttons and controls on your USB joystick to the keys on your keyboard. Although I tried other emulation software programs, this was the only one that worked. Once you've remapped your joystick controls to match the keys on your keyboard, your joystick will work! I am now a happy camper! I'm now playing Descent 1, Descent 2, and Descent 3 on my Mac Powerbook - and with a USB flightstick! Yippee! Pass the word!

Nice to see that the development of the Apple version isn't much behind the Win/Linux version anymore :) Hope that trend will continue...

BUT, I'd really like a pref setting to make sure it ALWAYS runs in full screen. The only way to get full screen seems to be to enter gameplay first, then hit OPT-ENTER.

Still doesn't boot on G3 iBooks... - Version: 1.9.163, 3/27/2007 07:38AM PST

The last version to work on all our 3D enabled systems was 1.6.182. Since then, the updates crash on G3 systems even with 32MB 3D graphics cards. Works fine, however, on the G4 and G5 systems. Apparently, whatever was fixed to exable Missions to function on Macs broke something that allowed it to work at all on the iBooks. A pity, really, as it should run just fine on that hardware, given the requirements and the fact that D2 and D3 ran fine on them in Classic.
Wonderful implementation

Kudos to the developer. Mac version is great. I play both the Windows and Mac versions (both on PPC and Intel), and frankly can't tell the difference once I start play. I appreciate the developer's continued support and desire to keep fixing issues. That this port of an old DOS program now runs as a Universal Mac app on both PPC and Intel just tickles me. Also love the fact that even the cheat codes still work! :)
Otherwise, the improvements have been impressive. v1.14.XX shows some serious improvements.
