Solution to use USB joysticks with Descent 3! - Version: 1.11.39, 12/24/2007 08:57PM PST

I finally got D2X-XL working on my Mac Powerbook G4! It's my all-time favorite game! I'm currently using D2X-XL version 1.11.39 and is successfully able to play both Descent 1 and Descent 2 while running Mac OS 10.4.10. Although some users prefer a keyboard, I prefer only a flightstick, and I can't live without it. With Descent 1 and Descent 2, I'm currently using a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro USB joystick, which works natively with Descent when running D2X-XL. However, figuring out a way to get a USB joystick to work with Descent 3 on my Powerbook G4 was indeed a problem. Because Descent 3 runs only in Classic mode, it doesn't recognize most USB joysticks (although the keyboard and mouse will still work). Therefore I searched long and hard until I finally found a solution. That solution is you need to buy a $20 shareware program called "USB Overdrive". USB Overdrive is a simple keyboard emulation software program that allows you to remap the buttons and controls on your USB joystick to the keys on your keyboard. Although I tried other emulation software programs, this was the only one that worked. Once you've remapped your joystick controls to match the keys on your keyboard, your joystick will work! I am now a happy camper! I'm now playing Descent 1, Descent 2, and Descent 3 on my Mac Powerbook - and with a USB flightstick! Yippee! Pass the word!

Nice to see that the development of the Apple version isn't much behind the Win/Linux version anymore :) Hope that trend will continue...

BUT, I'd really like a pref setting to make sure it ALWAYS runs in full screen. The only way to get full screen seems to be to enter gameplay first, then hit OPT-ENTER.
